[9:50 AM EDT - Ready for more upgrades?]

Ahh, HKL will be donating yet another computer to my growing cluster of Pentiums. Hmm, as the number keeps growing, I'm considering putting together a Beowulf cluster. (Specifically for Debian.) It'll be a cool project. (And it will be just as fast as my overclocked C300A!)

Wait.. let's see. With the parts I have (including HKL's), I can put together two P200 MMXs, one P166, and one P133. I'll need more hard drives and network cards, but I think I can pick those up as well. I may be able to put together a second P133. Shoot, I don't have a switch that can handle.. Hmm.

This will be a very interesting project. I wonder how much time I'll have to put into it though.

[11:21 AM EDT - More Beowulf.]

Hmm, this will be useful. Man, I'm really getting interested in setting one up!

[2:56 PM EDT - One late night.]

Man, one late night and I'm barely able to stay up right now. *pulls back eyelids*

I'm getting to bed earlier these days, so I guess I got thrown off when I went to bed at my "normal" time.

Great, tonight's going to be a late night too..

Hmm, now as long as I'm able to finish lunch before I leave the office..

[7:55 PM EDT - Reboot this!]

HKL sent me a link to some company that's recycling old computers. Unfortunately, their hours aren't that great for us 9-5 people (or for me 10-6). Still, I'll be going down at some point in time, and I'll be lugging HKL's stash of old computers along with me. Anyone else want to contribute?

[8:57 PM EDT - Never finished that lunch.]

Man, I never got around to finishing my lunch. By the time I had time to eat, it was already time to go home. It was one of those days I guess. Funny thing was, when I threw the soup into the waste basket, it all came straight up right after it hit the bottom. I made a nice mess from that. Fortunately, most of it went on the carpet.

I should be getting the last pieces of the puzzle tomorrow, but I probably won't have time this weekend to upgrade any of my systems. I did find a hard drive I could use in the 486 and it was using SIMM memory! *yoink* Whoot! 16MB! Even better!

I was also able to get all six SIMM slots working on that one computer. With the other 16MB SIMM, I should be able to put together a few kick-butt low end computers. Hmm.. The Beowulf cluster would be composed of a P200MMX with 96MB RAM, a P166 with 40MB RAM, and two P133s with 32MB RAM. I'm lacking on the drive space front, but you don't need drives in the Beowulf nodes, so I could probably put together a test system with those PCs. Besides, I was warned that the IDE controlers on a couple of those boards might not be working..

Combined, the cluster should be just as powerful as my computer! (Running at half speed.)

My second P200MMX will stay as my standalone server. Hopefully I'll be able to upgrade it while I'm doing all this other stuff.

I'm thinking of keeping it at four computers since the biggest switch I've got has four ports. I really don't know what I'll do with this cluster if I ever get it up and running..

[9:01 PM EDT - Canceled on this date.]

Hmm.. it seems as if I'm actually available on Sunday night again. (Hmm.. I never updated the agenda. Curious.) I guess I'm up for getting the crap beat out of me (again). Mind you, I probably won't have any energy..

[9:43 PM EDT - A small upgrade.]

Yup, I swapped out one of the working CPU fans with the server's heatsink (the fan doesn't work) and I took out the 8MB sticks and replaced them with the 16MB ones. Now I'm running 64MB RAM with a working fan. Hopefully that should keep my system running and cool for many years to come. Wow, the heat sink's still warm. *touches old heat sink*

I'll be renaming and changing Moneta then. I've got to think up of a good name for the cluster and it's nodes. I was thinking of calling the master node "molecule" and the rest "atoms", but I think that's much too common. How about "Hamiltonian" and then "perturbation"? (I could say my cluster is getting more perturbed?) "Ground" and "Excited"? (I could say my cluster is getting more excited?)

Okay, that's enough geekiness for one night.

[Saturday, September 13, 2003: Fun hockey.]

So, last night's hockey game was a fun matchup between friends and family (I was on the friends team). In all previous friends vs family matchups, the friends team got whalloped. This year it was a very close contest although I think it was the friends team that prevailed this time.

We had a new goalie try out in this game and he wasn't all that bad.
