[12:00 PM EST - No subject.]

Well, seems like the magic day has been moved up a bit, Theochem will be going down sometime tonight, so I've gotta move everything out of here this afternoon. I'll still have e-mail access though. Don't worry, everything will be forwarded to the proper machines, so I'll be getting mail.

As of this afternoon, all mail directed to accounts on THEOCHEM will be forwarded to that same userid on SCIBORG. This mail diversion will, of course, be reversed when the upgrade is complete.

Apart from the fact that my temporary site on Sciborg won't have anything except for the front page (I haven't finished changing my absolute links to relative links so can't move the site), things should be going fairly smoothly..

So I guess the Mars Polar Lander is a bust huh? Same thing with Microsoft huh? Busted! We'll see how both of these events unfold..

There's a quote I liked from Ace's Hardware commenting about the MPL mission:

What I'd like to ask Mr. Cook is exactly how much faster, cheaper, and better are these missions when they can't even remotely succeed? The past two missions have been riddled with problems, and both have been complete failures. I can only hope that the long-term effects of these disasters will not further cripple an already weakened space program. If we have anything to learn from these missions, it's that cutting corners doesn't work.

That last line is the main point of the comment. I agree wholeheartedly.

Hmm.. you can tell you're approaching Christmas when..

Two Christmas parties that I just heard about. One for the Chemistry Department, and one for our group (we actually have enough people to call ourselves a group!). So that will be two (free!) dinners that I don't have to cook for.

Anyone feel like getting a Blue Gene? There was a ZDNet article about it yesterday, but I got it confused with the 90 GHz hoopla going around at that time.

Speaking of speeds, there's word (from Ace's Hardware) that AMD is rolling off 1 GHz and 1.2 GHz Athlons from the fabrication plants. So we'll be playing around with 1 GHz of power soon huh?

Holy crap! I thought yesterday was a big day for Red Hat. Their stock shot up 52 bucks today! That's an increase of over 20%.. which left the closing price at 284 dollars a share. I'm sorry, but this is truly insane. I'm still kicking myself for not jumping onto the bandwagon.

It was a little chilly today, but this is only compared to the warm and wet week of rain that we had at the beginning of the month. Went out to Jose's for lunch, but was surprised at the number of people who actually went to Jose's today. There aren't usually that many people showing up around the time we go, but lectures are over, and many of the people who went look like lecturers or grads, so they might be enjoying the break before exams..

Spent most of the day fixing up my xsession stuff. I hadn't tried logging on to any other machine from here other than Theochem, and once I got pressed to move.. well, I realized how poorly implemented my defaults and managers were, so I spent a couple of hours fixing up my Sciborg and Scienide .rc files. I think they're all done now. They seem fine, but I'll find out by tomorrow if I screwed anything up.

There was talk of going to watch a movie tonight (Toy Story 2), but I'm not in the mood. Was perusing through the random text displayer and found an interesting perl command which I want to test out. That will take a while to implement, but all this sifting around is kinda fun.

Well, time to go. I should go and make dinner now.. I wonder what I'll make..
