[9:39 AM EDT - It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood..]

I'm back! (Yeah so what else is new?) Not much to say. When I got back home, I noticed that someone went out and got a couple of real pet dishes and a sandbox for our stray (I still think there may be a chance someone's looking for the cat). I asked if anyone's picked a name for our critter yet, and Jake told me that HNT named her (I'll get into that later) after one of his hard drives (computers I think he meant to say). Anyway, from what I've been told, the cat's name is Ai-chan.

So.. any suggestions for names?

Oh yeah, this morning I checked to see if it was male or female and I'm pretty sure our cat's a female. Pretty sure, not absolutely sure. Hey, I'm not vet or anything. Anyway, darned feline was a glutton for attention. Couldn't eat breakfast without being disturbed. I'll also have to rearrange my eating habits and stacking habits since the cat has a habit of hopping onto counters and such (which is why I lost a half can of salmon - at least the cat was happy).

Funny thing tho, ever since the cat's been around, I haven't seen the dove nesting near our front door anymore..

[2:01 PM EDT - Sunshine, lollipops and..]

Well, it seems to be a little too cold and too windy to throw the disc around today (at least for those guys). I figured that by the time I had to chase down a couple of throws, I would've been feeling a little warm.. but oh well.

I think it's time for the daily Science Teasers. I've run out of good ones, but hopefully this one will be easy enough to solve:

"Proof" That the Earth Stands Still

Centuries ago most people found it hard to believe that the Earth turns. No one could feel the turning, and there was no clear-cut proof of rotation.

Scholars reasoned that if the Earth were moving, a stone dropped from the mast of the ship at sea would be left behind as the deck moved forward and it would land some distance from the mast. Yet when stones were dropped from a ship's mast, they always landed directly under it. Scholars therefore argued that the Earth stands still.

[Is there anything] wrong with this argument?

Let's see if everyone gets this one right this time.

[2:44 PM EDT - I might have some changing to do.]

I've realized a problem that I've incurred on myself by implementing this comment script. Although I probably won't have this problem occur too often, there are times when the number of comments will possibly be more than I had anticipated and make the entry much larger than I would ever had guessed. This makes reading the entry itself a little difficult. I'm thinking of setting up a separate page to hold the comments with a link listing the number of comments for that entry. (Like ArsTechnica) Hmm.. I'll have to think about this.

[4:37 PM EDT - Lynx Comments.]

In my eternal need to make everything on this site Lynx usable, I've finally been able to set up a non-javascript comment system up. It's very similar to the javascript one except that it doesn't open up a new window. I've got a bit of fiddling around with the original script (so that I don't inadvertently give the viewer a javascript command to run) but things seem to be working okay. Those of you who don't use javascript (and so wouldn't be able to see my style sheets - will work on that later) should tell me if the comment thing is working or not.

[6:01 PM EDT - Unannounced meeting.]

I nearly forgot about the CTRL-A meeting today. I'm usually reminded by the timely e-mail message that's usually sent out the day before/of the meeting. Our e-comm officer is getting a little sloppy!! Oh well, will have to go see what's going on.. after a couple of rounds of Counter-Strike. I can blame my lateness on the lack of reminder.. yeah..

Okay, maybe not.

[10:08 PM EDT - Picking up my stuff.]

Meeting was fairly uneventful. Just came back from dinner. Went to Red Lobster. This time I actually finished all of my food *pats stomach*. I think I'm going to roll home.

I might as well state the answer to the above problem even though the answers are right.

Galileo showed the mistake in the scholars' proof in a book called Dialogue on the Great World Systems which was published in 1632. The scientist explained that while a stone falls, it also rotates with the Earth. Stone and Earth keep moving forward at the same speed, and so a stone naturally lands directly below the point from which it is dropped.

In his eagerness to convince everyone that the Earth moves, Galileo wrote his book in clear, conversational style. Instead of using Latin, the scholars' language, as was the custom in those days, he wrote in Italian, the language spoken by his countrymen.

His book was an immdeiate success, although it was opposed by the Catholic Church, which claimed the Earth stood still. Within a year, Galileo was tried for heresy by the Inquisition. The scientist was then sixty-nine years old and almost blind. Sick and frightened, he yielded to pressure. At his trial, he publicly stated he was mistaken in teaching that the Earth turned. Bit it is said that he left the courtroom telling those near him, "It still moves."

Now I wonder what I'm going to do..

With respect to updates, both Laz and KGL have some pictures up (and updates as well). Sparky also has an update, with a little thing about how her weekend went.

Been told my weirDo that there's a new Delta Assault map floating around for Counter-Strike. I'm downloading it now, and I'll be trying it over the next little while. Let's see if the changes make much of a difference..

[11:54 PM EDT - Time to go.]

Stayed here a little longer than I had planned. Got to go to sleep. I've got a new idea for the journal thing, and a new problem to fix. Geez, it never seems to end does it?

The problem I see with putting up another column for comments (or a nav bar) is that it starts getting cluttered. I could try saving space by reducing the font size, but then things get hard to read. No offence, but I can't read most of the stuff on your page Laz (and I'm only running at 1024x768). Maybe IE automatically increases the font size a couple of notches but anything smaller than 8pt font and it's near impossible to see what's written (of course, this doesn't affect Lynx).

I'll probably test it out to see what it looks like, but I really don't have any high hopes for this method to work.

I've thought about the reverse chronological idea, but then you lose the flow of the conversation (or argument as the cases have been). I find it much more easier to go through the comments (and my entries) in this fashion (forward chronological) so that I know what's going on and why things that were written were written. It gets a bit cumbersome once the entry sizes start increasing (which I really should be careful of) but when you go back and re-read them, it's much easier this way.

Anyway, I should get going. Been here too long. Need sleep..
