[Monday, November 13, 2000: Salmon spawning.]

Upon waking up this morning, I looked at the lamp to survey the damage. The lamp was normally attached to the wall by two rods, but this poor light fixture was wrenched from the wall, the wall mount was horribly bent, the rods were broken, and the lamp shade was torn off, although the wiring into the lamp itself was intact. Ironically, even though JD never was able to turn on the lamp, the lamp still worked. *turns on lamp* *turns off lamp*

I decided to take a picture for posterity.

Our first (and only) game of the day was in the morning against Tokyo (Mr. Broomball's team) in the semi-final match. We ended up winning the game with a score of 8-1. It wasn't really much of a contest and the outcome was pretty obvious, but we had fun. We stuck around to watch the other semi-final match between Australia and Minnesota. It was a pretty close (and rough) game, and although we were cheering for the Aussies, they lost by a score of 1-0. We knew who are enemies were..

Since we had the rest of the day for ourselves, we went up to one of the rivers near the city to watch the salmon spawn. I had never gone to watch salmon spawning before so I was quite astounded to see all the fish that packed themselves into those tiny rivers! Ho boy! We had gone fairly early in the season, so there weren't too many dead fish lying around (and it wasn't that smelly). I also enjoyed looking at the scenery and marveling at the large trees in the forest that surrounded the river. One of the creeks (the Niagara Creek) was completely dry (and had been for a while from the amount of leaf litter on the ground), so I decided to walk up the bank to see if there was anything interesting to look at up there. Not all too much actually. It's too bad we didn't have more time, I would've liked to have explored more, but there were signs posted everywhere telling people to stay on the paths because they didn't want tourists to make too much noise in the forest to scare off the wildlife. Oh well.

Afterward, we went downtown to look around. Actually, a few of the people there wanted to get tattoos. I ended up going with that group (to the Tattoo Zoo) to see what they wanted to get. One ended up getting a small Bam-bam (of Flintstones fame) on her ankle, while the other got a flaming yin-yang on the small of her back. A couple of other guys wanted to get some, but decided to have them the next day.

I was also reminded, after looking at the tattoo prints, that the symbol for Cancer is a sideways 69..

I decided to skip out on dinner since I was pretty full (I had a huge lunch with a couple of the teammates at Denny's). So I walked back to the hotel and relaxed for a bit. After a few hours, everyone had returned from dinner so I checked to see what was going on in the party room. After telling me again that my tail was going to disappear after winning the championship, they told me to join in on their dice game. I had no idea how to play this game, nor have I seen it before. Some of you might've seen it however, so I'll try to explain the rules. (If I can remember them correctly.)

This game is played by rolling five dice and the object of the game was to be the first to reach the exact score of 10 000. Scoring is as follows. Ones are worth one hundred points, fives are worth fifty. A three-of-a-kind is worth one hundred times the value that was rolled except for one (so three threes is worth three hundred, but three ones is worth one thousand). A four-of-a-kind is worth twice the amount of a three-of-a-kind (so four sixes is worth twelve hundred), a straight is worth 1 500, and a five of a kind is an automatic win.

But, as always, there is more to the game than just the scoring, but this should be enough to determine if you've played the game or not. I never did find out the name of the game, and if you want to find out how to play, you can ask me, although I'm not exactly sure how the scoring goes.

We ended up playing two rounds of the game. The second round was long, excruciatingly painful and by the end, everyone was hoping that SOMEONE would win. It was an interesting time waster however, and I would be interested in studying the aspects of the game a bit more..
