[11:54 PM EDT - Drive swap.]

I have been trying to swap out the drive from my backup system into my new computer but the machine keeps giving me the blue screen for some reason. In fact, when I try to put the other hard drive into my backup computer, it does not seem to work either. What is going on here?

When you say swap, do you mean these hard drives still have Windows installed on them? If the computers use completely different chipsets, you may be crashing because Windows is attempting to load the drivers for the wrong chipset. It can't be fixed in safe mode either because the same drivers are loaded as well. Try doing a repair installation so Windows will recognize and install the correct motherboard drivers.

Heh. That's what Derelict told me as well. I am indeed using two different chipsets between the two machines and that is probably the cause for my hard drive issues.

Apparently you can change the drivers to use a generic chipset so that I should be able to switch and reinstall the motherboard specific chipset once I get the drive up and running again.

Hmm, true. Another tactic is to uninstall all device drivers, then make the swap, and hope that WinXP will be smart enough to autodetect and install everything properly.

There are some other funky, advanced techniques out there. Just Google "motherboard upgrade without reinstall" (which is essentially the same as what you're doing).

Yes, I actually followed the instructions on this page and found myself a Windows XP CD. It took a while, and the machine hung during the reinstall, but the drive worked afterwards.

Mind you, this is all pretty moot since the plan is to install Linux on the drive..
