[9:33 AM EDT - Calculated risk.]

I know it's going to rain this afternoon, but I wanted to ride anyway. I'm hoping that I'll be able to wait out the rain and ride out when it stops, or at least when it's not that heavy. I have badminton tonight so I'll be leaving the bike outside tonight, but hopefully it won't be raining then..

[9:37 AM EDT - Sometimes.. sometimes the diaper leaks.]

Ooh, I think I need some sort of shoe rack cum seat thing in my foyer area. It's getting more and more annoying for me to put on my shoes and boots if I have to keep going down to the floor. Hmm, I'll add that to the list with the bathroom organizer, mirrored closet doors, blinds/curtains, dining mirror, garbage unit, recycling box, and new dresser.

[10:16 AM EDT - Going out of business.]

For any riders out there, Brampton Cycle is having a "going out of business" sale for today and tomorrow. Unfortunately I'll be busy.

Or should I just skip badminton?

[11:25 AM EDT - U stands for "unique".]

I wanted to update the ring tone on my phone, but I didn't have a USB cable to connect the phone to my laptop. Fortunately, Derelict had a USB cable that he uses for his camera and the heads are the same, so I plugged in the phone and waited..

<- waited.

Nothing happened.

I figured that it was because I didn't have the right software to recognize the phone. A few months later, EN showed me which software to use, so I installed it, and plugged it in again.

Still nothing.

This time we're thinking that the USB cable doesn't work. So now we're trying another USB cable, this time one that came with the phone.

Still didn't work.

Argh!

After banging my head against the wall, EN suggested that I try another USB port.

New device detected.

<- continues banging head against wall.

[11:28 AM EDT - Okay, I guess it does stand for "Universal".]

Yeah, so I guess both cables work. It was just the port that was busted.

[Thursday, June 29, 2006: I'm riding in the rain.]

I had timed things pretty well, or so I thought. Ever since I got my bike, I've been checking The Weather Network for constant updates to the day's weather.

I was right, for the most part. The thunder storms did come in the afternoon, and by the time I left work, the roads were dry and the skies were clear. I headed to badminton, confident that I would enjoy the ride back home as the forecast had predicted clear or partially cloudy skies.

When I finished badminton, I found a message from Windelynn indicating that people were meeting for a ride. I figured that it would be a good idea until I looked outside. A huge dark cloud had appeared to the east and just as I approached my bike, it started to rain. I figured that I might be able to make it to the meeting point before I got wet, but as I waited at the first intersection, the smattering of pellets turned into rain, which became a downpour in the thirty some odd seconds I was waiting at the light. I decided to find shelter and pulled into a gas station to wait out the rain.

The torrential rain continued to fall for quite some time and I realized that it would be better for me to head home as this was not the only storm cloud that I could see. I hurried out from my shelter when the rain let up and noticed a small band of blue in the sky cutting through the clouds and heading towards the south-west. Towards home.

I took that as a sign and sped back to the condo, following the bright band of light as best as I could, avoiding as much of the storm cloud as much as possible. However, I knew that the storm would eventually meet up with me as I had much further to go west than south, and I eventually took the plunge towards the storm. The few drops of rain that one would feel while standing around became a barrage of water at road speeds. As the rain got heavier, the skies got darker, and I got wetter.

I did not dare go fast on the wet roads. I have not ridden in rain since my training last year and I wasn't feeling very comfortable in that environment. However, by the time I got near my neighborhood, I had a lot more confidence in my bike's handling and my own abilities in the slippery roads and began to pick up more speed, and was riding fairly normally by the time I got back home.

I'll probably hazard future trips in the rain, although next time I think I'll try to make sure I protect those items that don't like being wet..

Oh, I also took the time to wipe down my bike. It needed a wash since my trip form last weekend but the bugs had been washed off during the trip in the rain. A little wipe down with a towel and the bike was looking as good as new! (Ditto for my helmet.)
