[Wednesday, September 29, 2004: Ultimate Zodiac.]

I got up early to make it to the tournament as I knew that it would be busy and I had a tendency of arriving late due to unforseen traffic issues. Ironically enough, I had no trouble with traffic today and I made it to the field an hour early! Doh! BMH was there volunteering, so I volunteered to help set up the tent, move stuff, and just do something before people arrived for the event. I was able to grab breakfast (Mmm.. Nutella..) and socialize a bit with the ninjastars as they slowly filtered to the field. BMH grabbed DWC, ZanZan and I for some extra photos for the So Cut DVD. Oh, one thing I forgot to mention: The person who I saw on the list who I was hoping to meet dropped out of the tournament. Ah well, but I did notice a name on the Leo team who I recognized.. But I never did get to see her.

I was grouped with the Cancer team. We had a lot of latecomers to our team, but after we had all gotten together, I realized that I was probably one of the worst players on our team. Half of our guys were over six feet and they could all run and throw. Man, could they ever throw! Our girls were good too, but only three showed up to the first game. We only had five signed up (two who were real Cancerians) so we were pretty short on girls already.

Anyway, our first game was against Pisces, and it was a hard fought game. Our girls were going savage and they held out well. Nobody ever really had the advantage, but we ended up prevailing in the end 17-16. One of our girls showed up for the second game, which was against Sagitarrius and again, neither team ever held a large advantage. However, when the horn went off, we were down 14-12.

Our final game for the day was against Aquarius. They got blown out by the other two teams, and we didn't stop the carnage. The final score was 17-6, although we gave them a couple of points. I calf ended up cramping up as I was running into the end zone for a play, and I sidelined myself for the rest of the game. I had a hockey game that night and more ultimate on Sunday so I didn't want to kill myself today. In addition, one of our girls had to leave early to go to work so our girls were playing savage again. One interesting point in the game occured when the captain for the other team made a proposal at one point in the game (to her team) when they were down 8-1 that she would play in her undies for a point if they got the next point. They got the next point, and in fact, went on a three point streak! (Pun intended.)

The games were pretty good and very spirited. I think we may have made a few close calls, but it wasn't a really intense tournament so a lot of things did slide. Our team wasn't good with cheers, so we ended up giving away MVP awards to the other team (Wheels brought along some DVDs to pass out.)

After the games was dinner. Well, there was beer first, but I didn't really care about beer. I was hungry. I had convinced CC to lend me a tupperware top and a fork as I had forgotten to bring a plate and utensils. People were supposed to bring their own plates (non-disposable so as not to produce any garbage) but I had completely forgotten about it and I wasn't going to eat out of my disc. So I had to be nice to CC for the rest of the day while soaking up her barbs. (I did get some good ones in there though.)

[Gemini and Cancer do get along!]

The Zodiac tournament is an ultimate tournamet held in the fall where teams are selected based on their astrological sign. There are limited spots available, and due to situations where some signs are missing males or females (or both), extras from other signs will come in to fill in for those teams. I was lucky and ended up with my team sign (Cancer).

BMH was taking photographs and happened to come across CC and I while we were in line, so we posed for a picture. The food was amazingly good. I was surprised as we had couscous, rice, beef and vegetable stew, fruit, vegetables, cookies, and other delectible desserts.

CC and I.

When the points were tallied, it was discovered that Taurus and Gemini were both tied for eighth place. Now this spot was important as it separated the top eight playoff teams from the bottom four consolation teams. Instead of going for a flip or game, the captains decided to hold a cups elimination contest. Now cups is an interesting beer-disc variant where the players have to throw the disc between two poles (which have cups on them). Points are accorded depending on if the disc passed through the poles, if the cups came off, or if the cups were caught.

The competition was pretty intense as four Taurus pairs faced off against four Gemini pairs. Although Taurus won three of the contests, the final Gemini team systematically wiped out the remaining Taurus entrants to claim the title and eight spot.

After food was eaten and my tupperware top was cleaned of (CC had to leave early so I needed to bring it back tomorrow.) I headed out of the park (I parked in the low lot) and went home to get ready for hockey.
