[12:27 AM EDT - Debian was a semi-success!]

It's taken so long to install Debian that I actually went back to my old flavour because I didn't have time to set up the services. I'll have to find another day to do that, but at least the base system is installed. I had some scares with hard drives not working, or CD-ROMs not working, or floppys not working, but things seemed to work out in the end. Let's see what I missed out here..

[Sunday, October 10, 2004: Trying to make peace with a Pat Chee too (son of Apache).]

I was setting up my system so that I could get my web site to work ASAP. I had gotten the mail server up and running pretty quickly. (I had switched mail servers but the switchover was fairly painless thanks to aptitude.)

With e-mail out of the way, I could concentrate on getting the web server up and running. It wasn't hard to install Apache, and then the modules I wanted, but while I was getting ready to install PHP, I noticed that there was another version of Apache out there: Version two! I got bit by the upgrade bug and quickly went to work downloading it. The changes are not really that major, but I rather upgrade to bleeding edge rather than to obsolescence. Ah well, that choice would eventually bite me right in the butt. (Although if I had gone back to 1.3 I may have had the same amount of problems if not more.)

So I installed the web server, and the test page came up no problem. My pages wouldn't load however. After a minute or so, I quickly realized that it was because I was using PHP for my site, so I quickly went to look for the PHP module.

It took me a little longer to realize that there wasn't one. At least not PHP5 (which was designed for Apache2 in mind). PHP4 was floating around but it doesn't really work for Apache2. So I had to do a bit of searching and after some time, came across a workaround until they actually come out with the module.

I thought of going back, but I figured that the worst was behind me. No I started getting calls from KW for help on his computer. Had he called the night before I would've been able to stop what I was doing to go down and help, but the timing was impeccable. I was basically stuck since I wanted to get my web server up ASAP, so I had to do some phone support while working feverishly away on my own machine.

To make a long story short, I spent the next twelve hours on and off the phone trying to get both of our machines working. In the end, neither was really functioning properly. I was able to get my PHP to work, but my Perl scripts still didn't work, and I had to go to hockey.

Heck, I had thought that it would rain that morning so I skipped out on ultimate practice. Well wasn't it a surprise to look outside and see that it was fairly dry outside?

Ah well, and to top it off, we lost our hockey game. We were up, lost the lead, went to a shootout, and lost by one goal. Argh!

So I was left with a server with a site that half worked, and a buzz from the tea I had after the game, knowing that I needed to get sleep.

I didn't get a lot of sleep..
