[Thursday, December 26, 2002: Giant Budda.]

Apparently there was some sort of maintenance going on with the building and they shut the power down in the entire building at nine. This meant that there was no hot water, no lights, no elevators, and no nothing until power was restored later in the day. Sucky.

My parents took me out to Lantau island to take a look at the Giant Budda that was built at one of the monestaries near one of the peaks. We took the MTR out to the island and caught a bus to the peak. Let's just say that this bus ride made yesterday's bus ride feel like a walk in the park! The road was even steeper, it was narrower, and the driver was going faster on this road than the other day! Holy crap! Not only that, apart from the sheer drop off on the sides and the ultra low (one foot) barriers, this road was usually a one lane thuroughfare which was to support two-way traffic! There were some passing points, but they were few and far in between. It was made more hazardous by the fact that there was a lot of traffic on this road, which begs the question: Why don't they widen the road? It would be a great road to race on, if you had life insurance.

Fortunately, we made it to the Po Lin monastary without anything bad happening to us. The weather was nice and sunny, so I was able to climb up the stairs to the Giant Budda to look around and afterward check out the monestary itself. I saw a couple of monks one the grounds, but man, I felt sorry for them since they had to work with all of these tourists around. (And I mean this place was flooded with tourists.) Heck, some of the places used for placing incense were basically bonfires because there were so many sticks that people put inside. Man, it just seems so.. sacreligious.

The ride down was just as hairy, but again, we survived unscathed. I found out later that there was a terrible accident on that road involving two busses a couple of days after our visit.

We then wandered around Kowloon for a bit before eating and heading back to the apartment when it started to rain.

I found out that my departure time was 2:25, not 12:25 so I didn't have to rush the next morning. So I ended up watching the TV for the rest of the night. There was some really cute girl in some movie about sleepwalking with a Japanese co-actor.
