[Sunday, December 22, 2002: Snowboarding on Skibidou.]

We got up pretty early considering how late we went to sleep the night before. Actually, I kept the poor kid up with my coughing and snoring. I wasn't feeling all too good with my cold, or whatever it is I have, so I really didn't want to go on the trip since I doubt I'd be able to rest at any time (double plus so since I was the driver). The plan was to leave for the hill around nine-thirtyish, but the other group we were meeting up with were a little late. In fact, Dangerman was sick so there were only three in the other car! We got to the ski hill about an hour before noon, and GT and I needed to rent equipment. We decided on a quick four hour tour since I didn't think we'd last more than that. Afterward, I got my lift ticket (for the bunny hill) and headed out to the lift with girl and JW.

We got to the conveyer belt and we went up. I didn't fall when I got off, so that was a good sign. (The bottom liftie was a cutie.) The first lesson was the heel edge. I think I fell down six times. By the time I reached the bottom, I had a mild headache and was already a little sore. That just meant that I wanted more right? (Right.) So I went up again to do the heel edge, and fell seven or eight times. (I didn't bother counting since I knew I'd lose count by now.) By then my ears were ringing and my wrists were a little sore. It was time to work on the toe edge. I found the toe edge harder than the heel edge for some reason, and although I only fell down four times or so, I fell backwards a couple of times and that was somewhat painful. I decided to learn how to get both edges by the time we left the hill, so while TT and GT were getting their lessons, and girl and JW were on the slopes, I continued riding the bunny hill, working on each edge, and falling, falling, falling.

I was warned before hand by KK about the number of times you would probably fall down the first time you went snowboarding, but this was ridiculous! Eventually, I was able to find my balance point and I stopped falling. It was.. uplifting. Actually, a girl came by me after I came down the hill and told me

"You're doing pretty good!"

She was kinda cute actually. But I had no time to socialize with snow bunnies. I wanted to master this art they call "snowboarding". Eventually, I was able to learn how to stop with either edge. Now all I had to do was work on my transition.

The hardest part was picking up speed. To actually do some of this stuff, I needed to be moving somewhat faster than standing still. This did not bode well since I tended to fall at those speeds. In fact, on my last run down, I was determined to try a carve. With JW and girl at the bottom watching, I ponted down the hill, picked up speed, caught an edge, and did a belly flop. Ooch, that was rather painful. I had the presence of mind not to land on my wrists, but I didn't have the presence of mind to think of something else to land on when I was heading for the ground, and the stomach came first.

For a first outing, it was okay. I wanted to do better though. We went to the chalet for some food (Poutine! Yum!) before heading back to the city.

We went to the T's place and then back to the house where we got cleaned up (well, JW did) and picked up the copy of "The Ring". We bumped into one of KL's nieces who's name I forgot but it translated roughly to "quick ears". Heading back, we found out that we couldn't play the CD, ate dinner, and I finally saw the video. Ugh. Remind me not to do THAT again.

After that, we went out to watch "The Two Towers" with MG and BT before grabbing a bite at Rockaberry's (Mmm.. Truffle.) and then heading back home for sleep.
