[2:18 PM EDT - I thought this was a nutty joke.]

I wasn't sure about the validity of this alert, but I guess it's a real alert, despite the words and names being used.

Anyway, Madelaine forwarded the article to me, and it didn't take long to find the original article.

[2:52 PM EDT - Only complete computers..]

Argh! I went to the reBOOT site and found out something:

"Receipts are not issued for parts and peripherals."

Crap. Oh well, it's not like I need them. I'll have to see if I can get those other computers working..

[11:32 PM EDT - I think it's overclocked.]

Hmm, I think one of the machines I've got is overclocked. It's showing as a P200, but I think it's actually a P133 (or thereabouts). That might explain why it keeps crashing and why the heat sink gets uber-hot (despite it's relative size). I could either find a fan for it, or reduce the speed of the CPU. Now if I can figure out what type of mother board this is..

[11:54 PM EDT - VX97.]

Ah ha! It was a lot easier than I thought. I just looked on the board and the model number was stencilled on it: Asus VX97. A bit of snooping around found me the manual (amongst other manuals).

I lowered the clock speed down to 133MHz, and the machine seems to be running fine now.

[Thursday, May 19, 2005: Salvaging these computers..]

From the stack of five systems I had, I started with only one which really worked. Another booted but crashed, and the other three.. well, two of them POSTed. Now I've got Debian installed on two of the machines that POSTed, and I should get that last computer up and running with the parts that I had lying around. Five working machines. Not bad. I'll see if I can use up as many of those spare parts as I can..

[Friday, May 20, 2005: A bit of badminton.]

I had a long day today, so I was late for badminton. I was surprised to see that only one court was in use. The others were either empty or partially used. This was the worst turnout I've ever seen, which is pretty sad, since my attendance is dropping and will probably get worse after I move. I didn't play all that well, but I wasn't playing any difficult games either, so it was all good in the end.
