[5:59 PM EDT - Mental Exercise: Bullet proof.]

We were having a discussion about bullet proof glass and we eventually came down to asking a simple question: Does having more, thinner material slow down bullets better than one thick piece of material? For example, let's say there is a three centimeter plate of uniform metal, say steel and you shoot a bullet through it. Would that steel slow the bullet down more or less than three one centimeter thick steel plates spaced a centimeter apart?

If one makes the usual assumptions (uniform material, uniform temperature, no gravity, no air, etc.) which would be more protective?
