[1:43 AM EDT - Why does PayPal need it?]

That's curious. I've been doing credit card transactions over the Internet for quite some time now and nobody except for PayPal has asked for that verification number on the back of the credit card. Aren't you not supposed to give it unless the credit card company asks for it?

Lots of places have asked me for that verification number, to the point where I have it memorized along with the rest of my credit card. I hadn't heard about only giving it to the credit card company... I have no idea what it's for.

Hmm, the Hilton also wanted my verification number. What is the point of that number anyway?

Every card not present transaction over here in the UK seems to ask for the CVV2 number these days. Not sure what the value is when so many companies have it, though I suppose it's one number that never turns up on receipts..

It makes sense for the companies not to keep a record of the verification number, but for some fools like me who like pre-authorized payments, they probably do keep those numbers on record which makes sense, but defeats the purpose no?
