[9:31 AM EDT - Time for a (con)census.]

I got a notice in my mail last night about the upcoming census next month. I'm wondering, that with all the stuff that is going on in this present day society, whether having a census every five years is enough to keep up with the changes taking place?

[9:39 AM EDT - No terrorism. No cybercrime.]

I got an addendum to my home insurance that indicated that both terrorism and cybercrime were not covered by my insurance. I can see cybercrime as a growing concern to people as well as becoming more prevalent in the future. It's effects and costs are probably a little harder to calculate than material possessions like a car or sofa because the data that is lost can be hard to quantify.

The terrorism clause was interesting though. It won't happen much in Canada, but if there was a large terrorist event, it could cost the company millions. Ah well.

[7:49 PM EDT - Driving Conditions: Radio vans.]

I was driving home this afternoon and was listening to the radio as usual. I switch stations a fair bit but I usually sit on Z103.5 and something caught my attention. The DJ started giving a personalized message to some girl on the phone. After the first sentence, it was obvious that it was some sort of marriage proposal, so I tuned out until it finished and the music started again.

After the message was given (and the proposal was made) there was silence. Then she said,

"He's.. my best friend."

OMG, this is not going to end well. Poor guy! (Poor girl too.)

Oh, traffic was bad on the way home but there was a clump of traffic behind two minivans that were driving next to each other. I thought they were just conserving gas since traffic was basically stopped in front of them (there was about a fifty meter gap) but as I passed, I noticed that the drivers/passengers were talking to each other. From what I could tell, they weren't all too happy with each other either. I decided to keep my eye on them just in case something happened, but at these speeds, I doubt there would be any damage done. After a few more minutes, they broke up and went their separate ways.

[7:53 PM EDT - Twenty percent off.]

I went to pick up a gift before I got home and found something a bit more pricey that I had wanted, but I didn't have much choice. When I went to pay for the item, the lady behind the counter asked me (with a thick accent) who it was for. I told her that it was for a friend. She then pressed a few buttons and I saw a deduction sign on the register. Then she told me,

"I gave you twenty percent off."

I gave her two thumbs up!

Then as she was getting a bag, I told her that I didn't need a bag and she asked,

"What? You don't like bags?"

I wasn't in a position to argue so I sheepishly took the bag and thanked her.

[11:37 PM EDT - What's on the menu..]

I've been tackling a menu problem at work and came across a site with some great CSS code (and a dash of javascript) for generating drop-down menus. I've looked at the code and compared with the stuff that I had previously and discovered that the code was more compact, used a lot less javascript, and was much cleaner.

With the increase in bandwidth since I moved, and the reduction in size for the menu (it's about half the size), I may replace the navigational bars with this new menu. It's not clean or complete yet, but it seems functional.

I can then get rid of the expandable menu as well as drop one of the pop up windows. I can also use the change to move the navigational bar from the right side of the page to the left. (Which is more standard.)

A formatting change is afoot!
