[Sunday, April 18, 2004: Dim sum racing.]

I got up late today after last night's late outing. I wanted to do a bit of work before heading out to the patrol banquet, but I got a message from girl asking if I would go and eat dim sum today.

I figured, heck why not? Besides, I wanted to drive around in the old clunker so I went out to eat lunch with the rest of the group: girl, Dangerman, Growly, Laz, theMediaman, and SF.

After (a suprisingly filling) lunch, we headed to Laz's place to play on Growly's X-box. I didn't stay very long. There was a boxing game and a racing game (which was very fun with four people). Tenshi showed up later while SF and girl took my car out for a spin. (Nothing seemed broken when I checked it out afterward, so I think it was all good.)

I had to head back home however as I was already late for the patrol banquet. When I got home, KW was visiting, and immediately came out to try out my car. He liked the sound of the engine, and he demonstrated how to do the "power shift". He basically shifted without using the clutch, which was actually fairly smooth when going from first to second gear, but ground the gears a bit going up to third gear. You're not supposd to power shift down though, so I'll keep that in mind.

After that little lesson on gear shifting, I headed out to the banquet, even more late than before! Fortunately, I did look up the directions to the hotel, so I didn't have any problems finding the place..

[Sunday, April 18, 2004: Patrol advice.]

I got to the banquet late (as expected) but I didn't have any problems finding a seat. Our group had taken over two of the tables and I was able to find a seat on the second one (there were four empty seats there). I got there just in time to listen to the tail end of the pre-dinner speeches, so I didn't miss much. However, as I was the highest ranking officer in the patrol attending the banquet, I had to go and accept the award on behalf of any of our patrollers that didn't show up at the ceremony. It ended up being more often than I had anticipated (or wanted). However, I did end up being called upon to pick up some sort of achievement award. (Which I didn't expect.)

Anyway, the food was pretty good, and I had my fill. I ended up looking at one of the displays, and noticed that my picture was on one of them. However, I also noticed that they had labeled me as being from the wrong hill! I decided to do a bit of fancy correction..

I ended up talking with DE who gave me some advice with respect to running. He's been training for the half-marathon, so he's been taking some courses on proper stretching, etc. Some interesting things that I wanted to remember:

  1. Use shorter strides, and stand straight when running to maximize efficiency.
  2. Stretch before and after running.
  3. Stretching helps with reducing shin splints.
  4. Cross training will help with knee problems (as runners tend to overdevelop their quads and underdevelop their hamstrings).
  5. Eat a 4:1 ratio of carbs and protein within an hour of exercise to maximize nutrient uptake.
  6. Also, eating after exercise will reduce soreness afterward.

I'll need to keep those in mind. Actually, I should go and talk with someone to see if I'm overdoing (or underdoing) things..

I ended up staying until the end of the dance even though I didn't actually dance much. It was all good though. I ended up taking home a number of glasses, so I've got quite a number of cups to play with now..
