Morning! Any triskaidekaphobics here? I just got word that Scour has filed for bankruptcy! Doh! Where am I going to get my MP3s from now? Okay, so I haven't gotten any MP3s from them in a long, long time (they took them down ages ago). I first saw this on the ShackNews.
Ouch. I hope nobody out there owns any tech stocks. They got hammered recently. (My stocks are only worth what I paid for them now.) On another note, this is also a good time to buy.. *checks* Oops. Too late, people are buying already.
On the update front, we've got Laz who's been playing around with his page, and KGL who's complaining (as always =).
I guess I should go and take a shower now huh?
I've been reformatting some of the less (or never) visited pages for the past little while. I've also fixed a little bug where people who don't use javascript (or keep it turned off) would open a new window when clicking on the links on the calendar. (I personally found that annoying and it took me a while to think of an elegant way of correcting it.)
I'm also eagerly awating some tapes that a certain overworked commuter is picking up later this afternoon.. *rubs hands in anticipation*
You know, there were other things I wanted to talk about, but I can't remember what they were ATM. Oh well, the connection's pretty slow as well, so I think I'll sign off for now. Let's check out some of this mail..

I got a link from girl a little while ago about some interesting American history. Check out this snippet:
By 1925, Bryan and his followers had succeeded in getting legislation introduced in fifteen states to ban the teaching of evolution. In February, Tennessee enacted a bill introduced by John Butler making it unlawful "to teach any theory that denies the story of divine creation as taught by the Bible and to teach instead that man was descended from a lower order of animals."
When were the monkey debates again?
With the demise of the Port Perry broomball league, I've been enlisted to play Ultimate on Sundays! Yay! My first game is this weekend! Yay! I'm going to be so sore! Ya.. uh.. oh. *blink* Yay!
Many thanks to Squishy and DWC for letting me run myself ragged on the weekends.
Hey, I just got mail (actually, it was an envelope in an envelope, but inside the second envelope was the letter) informing me that I got an award (Outstanding Achievement in Graduate Studies) for my grad work. I wonder who won the medal..

I found this fairly interesting. On the splash screen for Windows 2000 Professional, there's a line at the bottom stating,
Built on NT Technology
Er, doesn't NT stand for "Net Technology"? So the statement actually reads,
Built on New Technology Technology
Those crazy Microsoft people.

About your remote script speed, do you know if HostnameLookups and/or IdentityCheck(or their nearest non-Apache equivalent) is turned on on your server? It seems like something has to timeout before data is sent. This is the only thing I can think of if the scripts are fine locally.

Actually, the server does do a hostname lookup. But not all of the scripts take note of the host names however, or does this matter?
A better question would be: How do you fix it?

Yup, it matters. Any time you run a script with that HostnameLookups on, the CGI module will try to find the hostname of the client so it can populate the REMOTE_HOST environment variable, whether you read that variable or not. That's (usually) unnecessary overhead.
Looks like the only thing you can do about it is mail your sysadmin and ask for HostnameLookups to be disabled. S/he can do it for your directory only if s/he's using it for something. It might not solve the problem, but it would seem to me to be the most likely culprit.
