[6:40 PM EDT - More "improvements".]

I've realized that a force reload of the main page will not always work when you're filling out comment entries. I changed it so that it will load the entry that you were commenting on in the main page.

Of course, those of you with javascript disabled won't notice a difference. (Unless it crashes your browser that is.)

So anyway, KGL has a new car, although she won't be driving it. That's.. about it.

Here's a quote from Steve Jobs which I figured I might as well put up (seeing that it's been up for a long time..):

"I used to think that technology could help education. I've probably spearheaded giving away more computer equipment to schools than anybody else on the planet. But I've had to come to the inevitable conclusion that the problem is not one that technology can hope to solve. What's wrong with education cannot be fixed with technology. No amount of technology will make a dent."

So do you guys agree? Disagree? I still remember all of those Apples and Macs that permeated our elementary and high schools. *thinks back fondly* Anyway, there's always people complaining how the education system is broken, and how our kids are stupid, and how we should do this or that to improve on the way we teach our kids. How do we teach kids that don't want to learn? How do we encourage kids that DO want to learn?

Uhh.. I think food's calling so I'll have to cut this short.

um...Steve Jobs is a bit of a blowhard idiot, i think. Just because his generous donations of computer hardware didn't make geniuses of us all, he thinks "technology" is useless at school? Idiot.

What's the printing press? What are flight simulators? Lots of people learn music composition just playing on MIDI sequencing software.

What he should be deploring is the generally unimaginative software out there that's billed as being "educational". They suck. They suck because NOBODY knows how to educate people, but EVERYBODY acts like they do... it's a cargo-cult science.

Ooooh..this gets me so mad! *Elmer voice*

Hmm.. my opinion leans towards Mr. Jobs'. We've all seen people using computers, and the idiots remain idiots and the geniuses remain geniuses.

I'm not saying that it's technologies' fault.. I'm saying that you can't just shove technology in someone's face and hope that by some mystical osmosis that the person is gonna become intelligent, good software or not.

I believe in tech as a tool, as a chalk and blackboard are tools, but I also believe that nothing can replace a good human teacher for actual teaching/learning. Of course there are exceptions, people who are keen enough to teach themselves' things -- but even they could certainly accelerate their learning when guided by the knowledgeable words of a teacher.

Well, at least until a suitable level of AI comes around, which obviously, changes everything.

Re: MIDI sequencing.. I'd guess that the person tinkered enough that the program simply made it easier for them to grasp something they were already interested in. No way a MIDI sequencer could teach someone who had no interest in that stuff the way a dedicated teacher could.

I agree with Laz here, technology is a tool that can, and should, be used to enhance a student's educational environment. I also agree with Reg's point that the way computers are being used (at least when I was taught) for education is laughable. I was personally interested in computers, so I tended to grasp the idea of using these devices faster, but what about people who are technophobes?

This leads me back to my original question, is the system broken? If so, how do we fix it, and if not, how can we improve upon it? Also, how can technology help?
