[Monday, August 9, 1999: Too late for the tour.]

We had planned to go to Victoria today, but that required waking up early to catch the morning ferry to Vancouver Island. The trip is approximately an hour and a half, which meant that at least three hours would be spent traveling on the boat, not to mention the time required to make it to the ferry docks and to make it to the city.

We got up late, we didn't go. Instead, we got in touch with Pops again and set up a rendezvous with him downtown (at the same station we waited for him before). This time, we didn't have to wait as long.

Without a plan, we started wandering around downtown through areas which we skipped the day before. We started at some area with tables that overlooked the seabus dock. Laz wanted to eat so we had to wait for him while he chowed down his McDonald's pseudo-meal. The next stop was Gastown and we marveled at the interesting steam powered clock. They waited for it to chime while I went inside one of the stores to buy a shirt (I had forgotten to get gifts for people on this trip.. so..).

Anyhoo, the guy behind the counter must have been impatient or something, because I was fumbling in my wallet to find exact change for the shirt and the guy reaches over to grab my wallet saying

"All you need is this.."

Excuse me? I like to handle my own money thank you. Maybe I looked like a dumb tourist or something..

Eh eh eh! No comments.

Anyway, after walking through Gastown, we headed towards Chinatown.. all five blocks. It was somewhat smaller than the Chinatown in Toronto, but that's not a bad thing. Chinatown in Toronto usually reeks of rotting vegetables and dirty sidewalks, while the Chinatown in Vancouver.. well, it wasn't as bad.

We passed by a garden of some sort, and poked our heads in. There might have been some sort of admission fee, but we slipped inside. Apart from the incredible algae growth in the water, it was pretty nice.

We hunted around for a bakery where I popped in and bought some pineapple buns. Mmm.. good stuff. Too bad the other guys didn't want to try them (their loss!).

Walked past a park of some sort and I finished most of my buns at the steps of the Vancouver Library (so now I know where it is, but I've forgotten so don't ask me).

Eventually, we made it back to Pops's place where we took our time deciding on where to go for dinner. The chosen locale for our evening sustenance was some Korean BBQ near one of the bridges. I've only had it once before with HaremPresident and Werdna, and I really liked it. Lots of meat. Unfortunately, you usually stank of smoke after you left the restaurant. This place had fume vents over every cooker, and the place was very neat and clean. Quite a nice restaurant. I still smelt a bit afterward, but at least it wasn't that oppressive.

Our last stop was a return to UBC, where we wanted to show Pops "Silent Scope" and the cool dancing game down at the subarcade. We got there a bit after midnight and found the doors locked (a couple were chained). A couple of guys inside let us in, but some security guy kicked us right back out. Seems like the close down the place during the summer, since it's apparently open all the time during the school months. Ah well, we spent the next hour or so wandering around, checking out the new Forestry building (which was very nice) and some of the residences.

He later drove us back to the house, which was nice of him, since we really had to wake up the next day if we wanted any chance to catch the early ferry..
