[Sunday, August 8, 1999: Then there were two (to the U)..]

Called up Canada 3000 to check up on ticket prices and departure dates. The lady told me that standby flights were jam packed, and the first available seats were on Tuesday. There was only one flight, and there were only four seats left. Doh! I took two. I guess that's what happens at the last minute during the long weekend.

MJO decided that he needed a couple of days to readjust to GMT, so he didn't change his flight (which was leaving that evening). That's too bad, but I guess there wasn't really much that we could do here that would interest him. (Especially since we had no vehicle) So, after lunch, we saw him off. Told him to come back soon, and actually make it to Waterloo next time.

Down to just Laz and me, I wanted to check out the University of British Columbia (UBC). Again we took the bus, again we spent the better part of the day traveling. One girl who got on the bus looked very much like someone I knew.. but seemed nicer =).

We made it to the campus without a hitch, and on our way to the Student Union Building (the sub) I passed by someone else who looked like Madelaine. Oi.. I should have double checked.. but it couldn't have been her.. nono..

Our first stop was the arcade (known as the subarcade). They had two games that were interesting. The first is "Silent Scope" in which you plated a sniper for the police. The game sported a full size sniper rifle with working scope (the scope had a screen which showed the zoomed targeting area). The scope view was also on the main screen, so you didn't have to use the scope, but it was cool nonetheless. Difficult tho, as you really need a good, solid base and steady hands to make some of those head shots.

The second game was a large dancing type game. The playing area had these four floor panels which you would step on, and the screen had these arrows which would light up. When the arrow lights up on the screen, you have to touch the corresponding floor panel with your foot simultaneously. You get to view a list of the arrows that would show up, but the whole thing was timed with the music being played in the background. Some steps required you to hit two panels simultaneously! It's like.. twister disco. The music was quite catchy too, very jpopish. The first guy I saw playing the thing was very very good. He was literally bouncing on the floor right in time with the music. Later attempts by other people weren't as.. successful. I haven't seen it anywhere else yet, but I'll keep an eye open.

We wandered around the campus and I was impressed by the size and scope of the entire place. The buildings were a mix of ultra modern design (the library, or forestry building) and old traditional (the old math building). Comparable to the University of Toronto campus, but with much more space, less pollution, and a much better view.

We headed off to the Anthropology museum, but it was closed. We got there a bit past five, so most of the sites of interest had already closed for the day. Laz then showed me some of the things that he saw, like the artillery post (built in world war II), the Japanese garden (from the outside), down to the recreational beach (which was packed), and the botanical gardens (which were closing).

The rec beach was the only attraction which was actually open. There were tons of people down there enjoying the surf, sand, and company. Uhh.. for those of you who don't know about it, the rec beach is a clothes optional beach, and most of the people down (men usually) there were taking advantage of this fact. I took a little hike around the beach to check it out. There were a lot of peddlers selling beer or other drinks, and there were guitar players, a giant suncatcher (It was bigger than me!) and you usual population of people lazing around. It was like.. Woodstock at the beach. A very hippie experience.

We eventually went back to home base. Got back very late, which meant that dinner had to be at Denny's. Again, one of the waitresses was a mixed oriental-Caucasian who looked really cute with those pigtails. Laz didn't really like her high pitched voice tho.

Last thing before I go? Uhh.. flipped to Much Music while I was at the house. They have this really good looking VJ. Really nice. That's it.
