[Monday, September 30, 2002: Time for an upgrade.]

I decided today to upgrade my server. Boy was I in for a long weekend. I had to tutor this afternoon, so I lost some valuable hair pulling time doing that and washing the car. Yup, I actually went outside (which was really nice and sunny) to hand wash the car. There were still a lot of bugs attached to the front bumper from last month's white water rafting trip which I wanted to get rid of. There was also the sap on the hood from the visit to the cottage. Finally, I had this strange white stuff on the door which looks like paint. Anyhoo, I tried my best to scrub it down, and I was sucessful at removing most of the grunge. Unfortunately, because the water was so hard, I had tons of streak marks and other stuff on the car. The sun was actually quite strong, and it was warm so the water evaporated nearly as quickly as I put it on. (It's just an excuse since I was too lazy to wipe it down.)

I began the server upgrade after I backed up my user information and threw the information onto Theophany. The installation went smoothly, and I was able to get rid of the hard drive overlay in the process (finally!). Even better was the fact that I was able to restore the boot sector on the hard drive. Now I don't have to rely on a boot disk to get my system up and running after a shutdown.

Then the pain started.

As I was going through my backup files, I realized that I was missing my address book. By default, when I was zipping my directory, it ignores any hidden files. The address book was one of them. Argh! *smacks head* That was annoying. As well as the fact that I forgot to back up the BEGghILOS 2 homepage as well. (Not to mention most of my configuration files.)

Ah well, it wasn't like anyone was looking at that site anyway. But still..

After kicking myself for a while, I went back to the task of restoring my services. Some of them were quick to bring back up (after I got used to the new "features") but I wasn't able to bring my mail server back online. I didn't have much time by that time since I had a hockey game which I rushed to after cleaning off the hair from the floor.

The hockey game was pretty good. Apparently there was nobody on before us, so I could've shown up early to take advantage of the extra time. I'll remember that for next time. I guess the extra ice time wasn't that good of a thing. By the time we got near the end of our timeslot, some of us were really sprawling out there and a couple of us got injured to boot! Throw into this, the fact that the rink guy gave us an extra twenty minutes of playing time.. and that's a recipe for a LOT of tired people. We decided to end the game long before the guy would've hauled us in. I'll remember this for next time though. We could try stretching out our games next time.

I got back home to go back to working on the server. I spent the next two hours trying to get mail back up without any luck. I gave up sometime before four since I had to get up the next morning for ultimate.
