[6:55 PM EDT - Shoeless Joe.]

I just finished reading W.P. Kinsella's "Shoeless Joe". It's quite interesting how I read it right after finishing "The Catcher in the Rye". It also brought back some of the lyrics to Moxy Fruvous's "My Baby Loves a Bunch of Authors". Nice book. "Field of Dreams" is does a fairly good job, but as usual, they cut out a couple of characters and jiggle the plot to suit the silver screen. (Also, last I chekced, Salinger was white.)

No plans for today. Spent most of the afternoon reading. I've got one more book left in the pile and it's a doozy: "Anna Karenin". It'll probably take me a month to finish..

DWC's thing is tonight. Hopefully I won't get lost..

[7:31 PM EDT - CS 1.3.]

I tried out the new version of CS with Laz and Pops last night. The voice communication isn't that bad, however, depending now how your system is set up, the incoming voice messages may not be very clear. Mine apparently wasn't but Laz was clear enough on the server we were on. I tried out another server (which is usually full), but the messages were audible and they actually used it for tactics: "Everyone rush bomb site A, through the double doors.", "Rush! Rush! Don't stop!", "Plant the bomb! Yo QYV, plant the bomb!". Stuff like that.

I didn't get to use the spectator technology much, but the game itself seemed a little faster. I'm not sure if that was a byproduct of the patch or if I'm just seeing things. Anyway, I only played a couple of hours last night so I should check it out a bit more later.

I remember talking to EL a while ago about experience. I think this was the phrase he was quoting:

Good judgment comes from experience.
Unfortunately, the experience usually comes from bad judgment. - Higdon

Found it on DWC's sig.

I think I've got to clean up my room a bit..

[Sunday, September 23, 2001: Thirsty Monk.]

I drove down to Oshawa to watch the Checking Line do a little gig at the Thirsty Monk. I wasn't sure how long it would take for me to get down to the bar, but I wanted to make it for ten-thirty and gave myself an hour to get there. Well, traffic was really good, and I do live on the east side of town so I ended up reaching the bar around ten. I can never seem to make it on time. I'm eaither way too early, or way too late. (Usually it's the latter.)

Anyhoo, I could hear the music from outside, so I figured that I might as well check in. (Free parking on weekends! Yay Oshawa!) When I got inside, the first thing I noticed was the age of the clientele. They were at least ten years older than me on average, but more likely fifteen to twenty. Furthermore, apart from one person in the band, I didn't recognize anybody. Great, that's what happens when you're early.

Not wanting to look like a doofus who's just hanging around, I went to the bar and ordered an iced tea. I got my drink, paid the bartender, took a sip.. *smacks lips* Kinda tingly. Iced tea isn't supposed to be carbonated is it? Good thing that I decided to nurse it (I already got it, I wasn't going to get rid of it) since my stomach started complaining several minutes later. *groan*

The music was good (it was rock) and they were covers mostly. I say mostly since I didn't recognize all of the music so something in the mix could've been original. Actually, I was spending most of my thought processes wondering why I ended up at the bar so early. I spent even more wondering why the gig started even earlier! Anyway, Squishy (as friendly as ever) eventually popped in (should I mention the pretty face thing again? Nah!) and started pointing out people that she knew. Actually, one of the girls who was there passed by me, but I didn't recognize her. (I thought: She's kinda cute. Looks kinda familiar too.) Anyway, Squishy told me who that was, and I didn't make the connection. Then the girl pulled her hair back and asked if I recognized her now? Oh yeah! *pause* Actually.. no. But I don't say this out loud because I don't want to seem like a completely unobservant slob.

<- wearing ripped jeans at that time.

I did recall seeing her before eventually, but it took several minutes for my memory banks to retrieve the information. Don't ever expect an immediate answer if you ask me a question. I get lots of brain farts.

Eventually, more and more people wandered into the bar, some whom I actually recognized form the Monday ultimate group and so I didn't feel so lonely anymore. (The place got pretty packed.) I did get to talk to a number of the people I didn't know. I need to work on those "talk and listen while very loud music is being played in the background" skills.

The Checking Line played for three periods, of which, I did recognize most of the songs in the last two. I also sung along with the rest of the audience that was near the "stand". (More like alcove.) The gig finished around one-thirty, and I made it home after two. It was a good night out.
