[12:38 AM EDT - Neat belt.]

When CL came over to get me to try on the new clothing, she gave me a belt to use and was very proud of it because it had a twistable buckle so that you could show either side of the belt on the outside. One side was black and the other was brown. This allowed for better mixing and matching of the belt with a wider array of pants.

It thought that it was neat as well, but it was too big for me and told her to find a smaller one instead. This morning when I was putting on the belt that I usually use with my pants, I took a closer look at the buckle.

[2:31 PM EDT - Leak on Elm street.]

It is such a nice day today. The weather is great for riding, so I did. Since there is some heavy construction going on on Avenue road, I took one of the side streets up to the highway. As I got close, I noticed the my back brake started failing. It did not bother me all that much since my front brake still worked, and most of the braking power was at the front.

After I had stopped and started again, my rear tire spun out and my bike fishtailed before I regained control again. That surprised me a little but I figured that I must have hit an oil spot. I then noticed that my oil light was on and when I looked down, I saw a stream of oil gushing out of the bottom of the bike. I quickly brought my bike to a stop, and then turned off the engine. Another rider came up to me and mentioned that I had been leaking for a little while. There was not much else I could do but call for help, since I did not have any extra oil or even the right tools on me to replace the filter.

After calling around, I was able to get in touch with my dad. He decided to come by to help me out. By then I had already started pushing my bike back to my condo, or at least to a place where I could leave the bike for a little while. The neighborhood I was in seemed to have no street parking allowed during the day.

Anyway, my dad showed up and we went to a local Canadian Tire to pick up some oil. Then he dropped me off at my place to pick up some tools, and brought me back to my bike. I tightened up my oil filter, filled up the tank, and started the engine.

It started to leak. I took a closer look and noticed that the gasket that connected the oil filter with the bike was not properly seated. A part of it was sticking out, and that was where the oil was leaking through. Doh!

Well, my dad had to go, so I resigned myself to the task of pushing my bike back to my condo. It took about forty-five minutes of slow progress, with many cars passing by, pedestrians watching the spectacle, and me slowly peeling off more and more clothing along the way. I also ended up scratching the paint off of my fuel tank because of the studs on my jeans. I was leaning the bike against my hip so that my arms would not be used to keep the bike up. To add insult to injury, my helmet fell on the road just before I got in. This was turning out to be a very bad biking day all around.

I gave up on the idea of even riding today and got my car out. I will have to fix the oil problem after work, but I will need to pick up a new filter, some new oil, and some tools to do it all over again.

At least I feel comfortable with pushing my bike now. I am quite tired though.

[4:16 PM EDT - Deposit made.]

Well, I have made my deposit for the Horseshoe Riding Adventures in a couple of weeks.

[8:32 PM EDT - Well that explains it.]

I just finished redoing the whole oil change and filter change thing. It took me ten seconds to figure out what happened to my bike. It took ten seconds to take off the oil filter and I saw the warped gasket fall into the oil collecting pan. When I looked at the oil filter, I noticed that there was a near pristine rubber gasket attached to it.

<- looks back and forth.

Argh!! No wonder why it did not work! I do believe that some people have gotten away with having two of those rubber gaskets on, but I got the short straw. At least I have learned my lesson. I think.

Was there a lesson here?
