[2:05 PM EDT - The Ghost of Kentuky.]

So here I am down in the mid-south. Things have been going well apart from that one screwup on my part. *hangs head* Fortunately I didn't completely destroy the system so I was able to bring it back up online. *wipes brow*

<- much karma burned.

Next time, remember to make sure you're running tests on the test server rather than the production server.

Anyhoo, I got a link from Madelaine which has a story attached to it. Apparently these people thought they saw a ghost in the house, and found out that a previous owner lost her husband in the Civil War and waited for him since then. Or something to that effect. I'll attach the story if I find it.

[Sunday, November 3, 2002: Posting message and food.]

I ended up getting up early so that we could make it to the site on time. After breakfast, I found a message on my phone. Curious, I listened to the message. It was a dial tone. Great. I hung up. I thought that we were leaving somewhat early, and when JM came along, he suggested that we take the scenic route since we had tons of time. (Great, so why the heck did I get up so early then?) Anyway, the drive along the river was good. Unfortunately, the river was covered with fog which completely blocked the view. Even worse, the fog spread out from the river valley and made driving treacherous for most of the way to the site. It was kind of cool actually driving through pea soup and popping out into a clearing where the skies were blue and the sun was shining.

The plan was to hang around and test the upgrade before worked on production server, so that's what we did all morning. While I was testing the update scripts, we got a call. Apparently the system was down. *blink* Huh? We weren't doing anything with the production system. *double checks* No, we couldn't have been the ones to screw up the system. *triple checks* Oh wait..

Apparently, when you do a certain set of actions, it resets the system to use the production database from the test database. Doh. That's not good. I went to work frantically trying to get their system back up and running. After half-an-hour of back and forth calls, we finally got things back in order. Whew! *wipes brow*

After that, everything went pretty smoothly. *knocks on wood*

I got back to the hotel, but was way too tired to go looking for food, so I ate nearby. Being on my own and eating on the company dime, I decided to order their fish special (which came with a side of salad) and have some soup. The soup was good, although when the waiter asked me if I wanted crackers, he left behind half a dozen packs of crackers. Not that this is a complaint mind you, but usually I only eat one packet, and it just seemed to me that six was excessive.

Minutes later, a watiress came up with a huge bowl of salad (think East Side's) and asked if I ordered that dish. I looked at the bowl and shook my head, so she went off to ask one of the waiters to see who that salad belonged to. A minute later, she came back and asked me if I had ordered a salad that game with the fish. I nodded and she gave me the bowl. *stares at bowl* Oh my lord, how the heck am I going to finish this?!?

As I was halfway digging through my salad, the fish came. It was a huge plate which was topped off with veggies, mashed potatos, and a fish. My eyes glazed over as I realized that this meal could probably keep me full for the next week. I continued to eat.

The food was really good actually, so I wasn't too unhappy with trying to eat more food than could fit in my stomach. Hey, I'm not a growing boy anymore, so I try not to burst my belly anymore.

The music in the place really struck me as odd. They were playing 80's music the entire time I was there. I mean, I was eating there and I literally felt like I was still in the early 80's even though the decour was.. "normal". (Come on, who the heck plays Def Leppard's "Pour Some Sugar on Me" in a restaurant?)

The food filled me up so much that I couldn't got to sleep when I went back to the hotel. Instead, I finished off my postcards and headed out to the post office to send them out. As I was driving along the road (I was the only one on the highway since it was late at night), I was in the middle of a dimly lit part of the street and could've sworn that I saw something in the middle of the road. I swerved into the turning lane, and realized that there was a huge concrete barrier that was erected on that lane. It completely blocked off traffic in that direction and blocked access to a part of the road which looked like there was damage to it. What irked me the most was that there were no signs, there were no lights, there weren't even any reflective patches on the block of concrete. It was just there. Sure, in the daytime it was visible, but boy, I wouldn't have been surprised to see a number of cars piled up next to it by the next day. Heck, had I not been paying attention, I would've plowed myself right into it!

Anyway, I sent off my postcards without a hitch and made it back to the hotel where I crashed for the night.
