[9:59 AM EDT - Change of format.]

I am still planning to transfer my journal data over into a database but I have not gotten the time (or energy) to start the transfer process. In addition, I am not sure what the best storage format is for my type of data. The way things are set up now makes it a little cumbersome to match individual comments with individual entries. Everything is matched to a date, and when there are multiple entries in a day, the comments may not quite make sense.

I'm thinking of redoing the journal to make it more standard and have entries entered only for the current date, which may result in larger posts, but are at least displayed in a chronological order. I'll have to think about it though, since I tend to go for long breaks without updates especially around busy times.

It would also make it more difficult to look back and see what happened on a certain day as the true information on that day will not have been entered on that day, but on another day a few or several days in the future. Argh!

Are you looking at moving to a packaged blogging tool? If you're writing this yourself, I don't see a problem sticking with the way you have it now. I mean, it's all just code, right?

If you want to allow comments on specific entries, you could key them on an entry id. For legacy comments, just key to some flag value (like null or -1) and have an extra bit of code that looks for any flagged comments for the current date.

Or something. Am I making any sense? I never know.

I don't plan on using a packaged blogging tool. I put enough work working on this from the ground up and I like watching it evolve. Unfortunately the amount of time I can put into it is slowly shrinking..

Yeah, I do have entry numbers for each entry based on the entry timestamp. I just don't know the best way to display the comments and entries if I do end up doing that. If I maintain the day by day formatting, then there would be multiple entries per day and multiple comments. I could have the comments show up under each entry that gets entered, and thus throw on a link for each entry to add a comment I guess.
