[11:35 PM EDT - So that's what Atom is..]

I did a quick search and came across a page that explains Atom. It's the same as RSS, so I'll see if I can set my journal update script to create these files on the fly.

The whole RSS/Atom debate is still raging passionately.

The problem with RSS is that it's first-generation. Its story is similar to the story of HTMLs 2.0 through 3.2; it was a good idea, but too many people took it and made their own versions with different features. As a result, we have a large number of incompatible versions of RSS: The myth of RSS compatibility.

Atom is an attempt to start from scratch. Its goal is to be an open, compatible, and powerful syndication format. Its rise is being complicated by a lot of politicking. See, RSS has the brand power (like "Frisbee"), but Atom is technically superior (like "Ultimate").

Ah, nerd politics.

Sorry, I had to change the link. For some reason, if there's a word that's longer than the div block, it throws it below the other div block even though it maintains the size (more or less).

I like the last bit of that article: "..and RSS 2.0 is incompatible with itself."

Heheheh. Maybe I'll hold off on it until something concrete comes out of this quagmire?

If you liked that article, you'd also like his Interoperability one. Every discipline needs a witty pedant: Interoperability.

(and if that screws up your DIVs, then allow links in your comments!)

The thing is, most aggregators are very very liberal in their parsing. So the incompatibilities with RSS become an issue when you get into multilingual character sets and stuff. If you establish a feed with a plain title-link-description format, you should be fine.

Muddy Cleats publishes both RSS and Atom feeds, but I didn't write the software. :)

Links are indeed allowed in the comments. Check the guidelines.

However, these labels I semi-made myself. I don't know if there are any better methods.

You're going to make me READ in order to comment properly? Man, I'm an end user here. I don't bother with that.

And adding links in the ninjastars news forum is self-evident? Hmm, maybe I should set up an RSS feed for journal comments.
