[9:54 AM EST - Apparently the head's gone.]

Crap. I just talked to the hardware guys and they tell me that the drive is definitely kaput. I have a couple of choices. There are are some data recovery companies that will get my information off, but they cost an arm and a leg. I can try to fix the drive myself, but that obviously has no guarantees, or I can bring it back because it's probably still under warranty, but I'll lose the data (they'll replace the drive).

That really annoys me.

[10:06 AM EST - That my friends is the click of death.]

Well, I've been doing a bit of research and it seems that data recovery methods are beyond my price range, and it's not worth me to do all of that for the data I need to recover (some music, some e-mail, some financial stuff).

I just find this very, VERY annoying.

[11:24 AM EST - Open 'er up!]

Well, we popped open the hard drive and it seems as if the actuator arm is being knocked back and forth over the platter. We're guessing that the controller might be pooched, but then, where do we find another hard drive with the same controller?

[12:12 PM EST - Stupid.]

I was trying to recover some of my (very small) e-mail files and ended up overwriting all the empty space on the drive! Argh! Be careful with recovering files folks. Remember to recover to a DIFFERENT hard drive.

[2:17 PM EST - A fork just doesn't cut it..]

I've been trying to eat my noodles with the plastic for that comes in the bowl, and although it's doable, it's definitely not the best way to go. I tried out the seafood one and it was actually fairly tasty. I'm going to have to do a taste comparison with the chicken later. There's another type which I'll have to try next week, but I'm in no rush.

Since I only had one bowl, I'm still quite hungry. Let's see what I've got lying around here..

[6:12 PM EST - I should've checked with the "experts"..]

Dang! I was told later that HP was actually more of an expert on hard drives. So when I brought the drive up to him, he told me that it probably had something to do with the controller. (Crap! I wouldn't have had to open it up!)

Anyway, we did a few more tests, and he figured that one of the chips in the controller went kaput, so if I could get another one, I might be able to recover my data (assuming I didn't destroy it when I opened it up).

Well, time to check out e-bay..

[9:12 PM EST - The day after..]

Well, here's to the first day after my hard drive failed. Now that I've got nothing else to do, I've finished reading Microserfs and it's a good read. Well, if you're a geek that is. I liked it.

I don't have any plans for tomorrow and since I (basically) have no computer, I'm not quite sure what I'm going to do. I have some cheques to input, and some stuff to back up, but..

I'm getting a new drive that should be in on Monday. Hopefully I'll be able to get a new controller later this week, and with luck, I'll be able to recover something off my pooched drive. I might as well try right?

Finishing that book made me realize a couple of things, especially in the end when everyone was confessing to everything.

It's still not over, but it hasn't really begun. I've made my choice though, and I'm going to stick with it. Prepare for the worst, hope for the best. *gives thumbs up*

[10:29 PM EST - Now that wasn't too painful was it?]

I just finished entering in all that cheque information for the patrol. It wasn't as bad as I thought it might've been. The receipts were printed on thick paper so there weren't hundreds of cheques I had to enter. (Just dozens.)

Now that I've (finally) got that chore out of the way, I don't think I have any very pressing matters to attend. Unfortunately, the other things I would've been doing involve me having a real computer and my data.

Actually, there are a lot of things I could do on this site I've been putting off, and some computers to put back together again, and Debian to install..

[11:50 PM EST - Time to start selling.]

Well, without my computer, things have been.. progressing. It's amazing how much time I waste on that old electricity. HKL should be coming by to pick up some of this hardware, so it should give me some space for stretching out my legs!

Oh yeah, to sell my stuff I'll need an internet connection and some way to access the news groups. I guess I'll head in to work for that. All I need to do is to make up a list..
