[9:33 AM EDT - A bunch of pros.]

Dang, I've already got a number of responses to that forward I sent out last night. I've found out so far that I'm the worst of the lot! (At 13.) I'm quite interested in how the rest of you boyz and girlz fared. Actually, I'm more interested in the guys, since it seems like females can spot a fake one from a mile away..

I just heard "I want it that way" on the radio on the way to work this morning. It brought back some memories of my last year as a frosh leader.. *reminisces*

I think I'll put up a list of songs sometime today. Yeah..

[1:05 PM EDT - Powers of Ten.]

I remember seeing the original 'Powers of Ten' long ago when I was much shorter. I also remember something similar that was shown on Sesame Street. ("This is my house, which is in my neighborhood, which is in my city..") Anyway, I got this link to an interactive java tutorial from girl.

Cool beans! It seems as if Valve will be releasing their own version of voice communication in the next patch for Half-Life. (I never did try out Roger Wilco, but I thought it was a neat idea.) Well, unlike the first story, I didn't see this on the ShackNews, but I came across this article on ZDNet. "Seriously nuts". Heh.

The ZDNet article doesn't give a link to Steve Gibson's site, which is too bad, because his DoS story is really quite interesting.

That Steve Gibson story is such b****cks it's not even funny. Check out the commentary on @stake for a solid explanation. I'm no Microsoft fan, but this hype is nonsense, and highly irritating when we have enough REAL security issues to deal with at present.

While @stake correctly claims that there is no technical obstacle right now to enabling "raw IP socket" use in pre-WinXP Microsoft OSes (by bundling add-on libraries to a Trojan), Steve Gibson has a point in that WinXP will open the floodgates to the "mainstreaming" of DDoS attacks -- that is, non-filterable attacks orchestrated by people who are even LESS technically knowledgeable than script kiddies.

But, as in any "war", this is just an escalation (since security folks will eventually figure out a way to defend against thousands of WinXP machines with the ability to spoof)

Actually, I don't consider DDoS a security problem at its root. It's a politeness problem -- just like lowering the signal-to-noise ratio in USENET by spamming is a kind of "denial of USENET service" and is rightly viewed as originating in lack of netiquette.

Hey, I don't care about WinXP. The man's on a crusade; let him have fun with it.

What's interesting is the tale of one man's fight against a 13-year-old with an army of zombie bots. It's a geeky adventure. Sure, it reads like he's trying to sell you something and sure, he has a bit of a l33ter than thou attitude, but it's a fun boring-afternoon-at-work read. And those IRC thingies are really kinda clever...

Compile with static links, and there's not even a need for libraries. I realise it's all a bit silly, but I get really annoyed when I see people whoreing themselves to the media like this. He's more interested in a word bite for CNN than the realities of the situation.

*beats Steven Gibson about the head with a large trout*
