[10:02 PM EDT - Driving Storm.]

MJNL and I had decided to go out for dinner. She had a craving for 'shawarma' and I felt that it was good to go and have something different for dinner. At first, we wanted to check out Ma Va Me, but after reading all of the poor reviews, we decided to go to Anton's instead.

Now, before I continue, I should mention that there was a crazy thunder storm that was rolling through the area. When I had left work, I noticed that the western sky was a foreboding dark gray, and was not sure if I would be driving into rain. I also heard of a possible tornado that touched down in the town of Durham. However, the weather held, and 'Durham, Ontario' was far away so I did not worry about it.

Anyway, when we left the condo, the weather was still as foreboding as ever. The skies were dark gray and the clouds were moving swiftly to the east. We were turning out of our street when it hit: a wall of water started falling on us, and the skies lit up like a light show. At first, the lightning seemed to arc all throughout the sky, but within minutes, we were seeing bolts strike the ground every several seconds.

I thought that storm last week was the most lightning I had seen before. This one took the cake, and I was driving in it! Even with the wipers going at high speed, it was nigh impossible to see ahead, and objects started to litter the streets. Garbage cans and branches that were blown off by the wind would appear in my view and I had to swerve to avoid a collision.

As we entered the expressway, MJNL asked me why we were going in that direction as the restaurant was in the opposite direction. I told her that I was just going to the address that she gave me while we were figuring out which restaurant to go to. Unfortunately, I never verified that the location that she told me was the actual location of the restaurant, and I started to turn back, thinking that if we could not find out the location, that we should go home and look it up for ourselves.

We traveled down Yonge street, and the road was filling with water very quickly. As the street dipped into the Don Valley, the rivers of water that were flowing down the street formed large ponds in the depressions. It was not a dangerous height yet, but I did not want to stay down there for long. Even after getting out of the valley, we hit a traffic jam at the Lawrence intersection. The lights were out. One of the traffic light poles had been knocked over and laid across the road, blocking our path. Traffic in our direction passed through, one car at a time, driving over the severed power line (which continued to the other side of the street) that once fed the lights.

We went through more road ponds and around more debris before making it back home. By then, there were reports of tornados in the Vaughn area. When I rolled down the window to swipe my card, I could hear the continuous rumble of the thunder and figured that getting inside was a good idea.

MJNL said that it was probably a sign that we did not know the address of the restaurant. Had we known where to go, we would still have been driving outside in the storm.

We ordered in Indian food instead from Mela. It was tasty.
