[Sunday, September 8, 2002: Ski Bingo.]

I got a call at work. It was SC. Apparently she didn't know when we were going to meet up for the Bingo volunteering thing. If I had remembered correctly, the event was to start at seven, so I figured that I'd be able to leave around six and still arrive at a fashionable time.

Well, I was wrong. The plan was (which was detailed in the e-mail which I skimmed over) to meet up in Whitby at 4:15. A quarter after four! This was like.. two hours before I normally get off work. Not to mention that I had to leave before then to make it to Whitby on time. *shakes fist*

The reason for the early arrival was because we needed to show up at the hall at six to find out what the heck we were doing and to get trained. (We need to get trained for this sort of stuff? What were we doing?!?) Anyway, I was able to arrange it so that I could pick up SC at five which meant that I didn't have to leave at noon to make it on time. (Okay, obvious exaggeration.)

I also found out that ET wasn't going to be coming along. What the..? That means more work for the rest of us! *rubs eyes* Argh! Pollen!! *rubs eyes some more*

Anyway, I planned to leave at four, but there was free cake that was brought in and I can't turn down free choclate cake now can I?

I ended up leaving around half-past-four. This meant that I arrived at the pickup spot half-an-hour late, (SC was good about it, and gave me a home baked butter tart. It was very good especially when I was hungry at eleven.) and arrived at the hall half-an-hour late. Funny enough, we still beat most of the other guys.

When we got in, we were quickly given our aprons, cards (which were really just thin sheets of paper), and floats. We were given a rundown on what to do and how to run the lightning bingo session and we were let out into the wild. Just like the proverbial lambs to the slaughter. Goody.

Actually, it wasn't so bad. There was a smoking anrea and a non-smoking area. Since everyone who showed up (except one) was a non-smoker, most of us spent our time in the non-smoking area. Since we had to cover the entire hall, I did end up spending a disproportionate amount of time on the smoking side (where the walls and chairs seemed a little stained from the smoke).

During the lightning round, I came upon a situation which I wasn't told about beforehand. Someone put money on the counter. I paused at the spot for a few seconds, which can be bad since time is of great importance when you're playing lightning bingo, but as I was looking around for some help, all of the ladies who were sitting on my aisle nodded their heads at me to pick up the money. Oh.. okay. *adds money to tub*

There were a number of situations like that when I made a goofup, or if I wasn't sure of what to do, and the bingo denzins would prompt me or give me subtle suggestions. Overall, everyone was very polite to me. I heard that some of the other guys had a more rude response, but everyone was nice and cordial to me. Mind you, the hall was filled mostly with women (who were mostly fifty and up) and I was the only male (out of six) in the building who was younger than forty. That's if you exclude the announcer. Heck, I was the only minority as well.

Actually there were one or two good-looking women there who were younger than thirty, but eh eh. *shakes head vigourously*

I found out later, that out of the group that showed up, I think three of us (out of ten) actually did this before. Only one person who was wandering around the hall had done it before. Oh boy. Nice to know that now.

Anyway, it was over soon enough, and my feet were killing me. I didn't get to sit down for the entire three hours, and I could feel it. As a celebration, LR took us out for dinner at Harvey's. Since it was so late, and I just had a butter tart, I only ordered a poutine (to balance out all of the healthy food all the girls were eating).

The drive back was uneventful, although I was running low on gas. Again. (Couldn't find any Shell stations unfortunately.)

I arrived home past two. The drive itself was around two hours, and I was beat. I also smelled like smoke, but I was too tired to care. *falls into bed*
