[9:48 AM EDT - Driving Conditions: Merging lanes.]

Traffic today was pretty light. It is March break after all. I was hoping to make good time, but when I got on the highway, things got a little sticky. There usually is a slowdown at that area because a lot of people get off at the next intersection. Because of the sheer volume of traffic, the speed of all of the vehicles in the area is very slow, and changing lanes is pretty easy. However, the reduced number of cars on the road was enough to clear up a lot of the congestion, but did not remove the line up to get off the highway. This created a large speed difference for the people who wanted to get on (like me) and the regular traffic flow. I had outs though: people tend to butt into line in the middle of the pack, and by slowing down to merge, it allows people like me to sneak out in front of them. I usually do that if I am faced with a long line up and had already passed the tail of the column. If I see someone signaling to get out, I'll slow down behind them to allow them to escape, but then slip into their spot. A win-win situation for both of us.

I was in the slow lane, signaling my intention to merge. I was waiting for a break in traffic and watched as a car pulled up next to me, signal and slow down in front and to my right. He blocked my way out, but left enough of a space for through traffic to pass, after slowing down to get around him (or her). What was up with that? If I had seen a signal I would had gone, but of course there are many drivers out there who do not signal or signal at the last moment.
