Hmm, I did not get any sort of memory error when I tested my memory this afternoon. That was quite annoying. Well, this means that my initial hypothesis that I had bad memory was incorrect. I am now leaning towards a bad sector on my hard drive or a broken swap drive.

It took me a while, but I was able to find a version of Virtualdub that I could use to edit those DVDs that my dad made from the 8mm film he took from years past. I am currently cutting up the movies into their component pieces (my dad clipped most of them together in reverse order).
My computer is handling it very well. My old machine would have had taken quite some time to reencode these videos.
