[Monday, October 26, 2009: Star Quicheacola.]

MJNL had originally planned a baking day at our place for her co-workers to make some goods for a bake sale. However, we found out a few days ago that the bake sale was canceled, so the day was free, but the baking idea remained. I figured that if we decided to bake something, we should not have to eat it by ourselves. I invited Laz and Werdna over because I wanted to try out Star Munchkin (which Laz owned - we bought it for him for Christmas years ago), and also demonstrate Agricola. I had invited CJF as well, but they were busy. (I was thinking of inviting Squishy but I am pretty sure they were busy too.) MJNL invited a bunch of her other friends, but only AW was able to show up, which was good because she helped cook!

Laz, Werdna and I played Star Munchkin while the girls were cooking.

We made four quiches. Two shrimp quiches and two chicken ones. There were also a lot of crepes. There was more than enough food to feed twice our number!

After the meal, Laz wanted to go for a walk, so we all went out and walked up and down the street, looking at all the shops and restaurants along the way.

When we got back, I showed Laz and Werdna how to play Agricola. We ended up playing a lot longer than I had planned (about three hours) which was crazy since tomorrow was a working day. But we had fun, and we will probably try doing this again at a later date!

I think I've become an Agricola addict -- I find myself reading everything I can about it. It brought me to this blog, http://boardgamemaster.blogspot.com/, who additionally has some interesting things to say about Settlers of Catan.

Heh, eheheh.. heheheheheheh. I agree with some of the points that he brought up about Settlers of Catan. The game does rely on chance a little too much so that even the best laid plans can go astray but we have had quite a number very close games. The trading aspect can be a little annoying as well if we have one or more novices being taken advantage of.

But I find that Settlers of Catan is so easy to explain and understand that it is an excellent game to introduce people to more complex strategy games. I, for one, found the game quite enjoyable at first. But eventually got bored of it. I figure that Agricola will keep my interest for a little while, but I worry that it also gets to a point where if one is good enough, they can plan the entire game (plus contingencies) just from what you start with.

The same went for Axis and Allies when I was playing it long ago. (Although it too has dice that can go awry on you.) JK once attacked with twenty infantry and none hit. (The odds are one to six for each one.)

Axis and Allies can definitely go wonky when your dice rolls go seriously astray, as I proved so amply when I lead Japan to a complete and ignominious defeat at Pearl Harbour - barely made a dent in the US forces.

That was definitely an exception though; by and large, the game's results were predictable.
