[Monday, November 2, 2009: Hallowed Serenity.]

MJNL was taking a course this weekend which left me free to do just about anything during the two days. I decided to watch Firefly since I had just acquired it. I remember hearing all the rave reviews about the show and I have even recommended it to others because of these reviews (and then they would rave about it). I however had not bothered getting a copy.

What triggered this sudden interest was the new V series trailers. The woman who was in the trailer looked fairly familiar. A quick Google search later and I got a name: 'Morena Baccarin'. She looked familiar because she was on Stargate SG-1, but her earlier work was on Firefly. So I decided to check it out.

I found out that the special effects company 'Zoic Studios' worked on Firefly. They also worked on the reimagined Battlestar Galactica. Suddenly I realized that it was a show I wanted to see.

So I did. I was not disappointed.

I watched the entire series as well as the movie, 'Serenity'.

The show is character driven, and the actors portray their characters very well. The crew functioned like a believable family. I certainly enjoyed the humor, and all of the shots that the characters were making at each other. It balanced out with the drama and tension throughout the series. If one guy was in a bit of a pickle, the others would all put in their two cents, point, and laugh. But they would help each other out.

The special effects were top notch, but after seeing Battlestar Galactica, they seemed a little dated. (Perhaps because there were not as many battle scenes.)

Oh, and I like Mal's no non-sense attitude, and all of the pot shots they take at Jayne.

I was not initially interested in the show because the trailer and opening sequence looked more like a western, and I was more interested in harder science fiction. It was too bad I found out too late how good this show was. I think one mistake that 'Joss Whedon' did was to pitch this show to Fox. Sci-Fi would have been a better place for this series.

Ah well.
