[6:44 PM EDT - They're on strike?]

What? I called Bell to inquire about the high speed only option and was told that I wouldn't be able to receive any of the bonuses I would be able to get on line, which kind of sucks since doing stuff on line is so much easier. Anyway, the girl who I was talking to did tell me that the service was available in my area, but I decided to wait before I ordered the high speed connection.

After thinking about it, I called back and inquired about getting the high speed connection set up. The girl on the line told me that I didn't have any phone service set up for my unit and that the technicians were on strike, so it could be up to four weeks before I had it installed. Four weeks?!? Why didn't the first girl tell me that?

In any case, the first girl also told me that Bell wasn't advertising the bare Internet option yet, and that they were planning on doing some sort of kickoff on the 27th. If it'll take four weeks for things to get set up, I might as well just wait until then?

Hmm, have you thought about going with a 3rd party DSL provider? Significantly cheaper than Bell -- although they'll be affected by the technicians strike just the same. Doubt they can offer internet only if Bell hasn't started yet. --- HKL

I have looked at using a third party, but wouldn't they need a phone line already installed in the unit before they can supply high speed service? Bell will apparently waive any maintenance fees if I get the high speed service, but for the lower speed stuff I'd have to pay an extra ten bucks on top of the going rate.

I'm going to see if I can live without high speed for a while. I think it'll be better for me (and my pocketbook).
