[1:04 PM EST - Getting later with these updates.]

Hmm, I don't seem to be throwing stuff up in the morning recently.

Darn, gotta get back to work.

[9:18 PM EST - Good old parmesan.]

Man, it's been yet another busy day. I hope to go to sleep early tonight since I want to go skiing tomorrow.

I ended up going out into the field again. I might have to go back out later this week, but hopefully not. I've got tons to do.

Badminton went well. I got my racquet back and it's basically as good as new! *swings racquet*

<- narrowly misses hard object (floor/wall/head/etc.).

Oops. *puts racquet away*

I took another picture today which I'll throw up. Speaking of which, I really stuffed myself just now so excuse me if I make a mess..

While I'm on this topic, I've been wondering if parmesan cheese ever goes bad. I had a container of that stuff sitting in the shelf for a couple of years, and just now got to open it (for spaghetti). Looking inside, I noticed that the grains were pretty dark. Normally, they should look a bit closer to cream coloured so I was worried they might be bad, although I never heard of parmesan going bad. *looks at bottom of container* April 3, 2001. Hmm, is this the packaging date? *looks at container again* Hmm,

"Best before date shown on bottom."

Oh.. this stuff is pretty old. Mind you, I've eaten food many more years beyond it's expiry date before. *takes a look at container in fridge* I had an old open container which I'm finishing off (which is the reason why I had to open the new container). *looks at bottom* November 1, 2001. Well.. *looks inside container* at least it looks whiter. *pours cheese on spaghetti*

I went out to buy more cheese since I didn't want to hazard the old cheese. I got to the supermarket and quickly found the cheese aisle. I took the first large container and looked on the bottom: February 13, 2003. Uhh.. that's less than a month away. *pulls container from the back* This one says: July 3, 2003. Better.

I decided to take a smaller container this time, after looking at the best before date of course. When I was living in Waterloo, I didn't really bother with best before dates because I usually finished off food long before then. Well, at least in my last few years in Waterloo. My first few years were a bit more like this:

  1. Buy food.
  2. Throw food in fridge.
  3. Eat instant noodles for months.
  4. Remember food in fridge.
  5. Open fridge and consume food without looking at best before date.

Amazingly enough, I didn't get sick during that time.

[10:06 PM EST - News links for the night.]

Man, there's a whole slew of links on the ShackNews. First there's the number of people every year who probably walk home from an operation with more than they expect. Then there's embettering my English, losing lots of text messages (which makes me feel that my lost e-mail doesn't seem that bad). Then there's the confidential information on old hard drives, and the arrival of the next Harry Potter. (Man those books are getting bigger and bigger.)

[10:26 PM EST - Free tickets.]

I watched her curiously as she dove through the crowd around the kiosk. My mind was still racing as to the next words out of my mouth when she emerged triumphantly from the throng. She walked over and motioned me to reach out my hand.

"Here," she proclaimed as she placed a couple of free passes into my outstretched palm.

I gave her a questioning look. "What am I going to do with these?" I inquired.

She flashed me a mischievous smile and pulled out her gloves. "Use them when you're out with a girl to have a good time," she explained as she slipped her fingers inside.

Staring at the small sheets of paper that rested in my hand I wondered when that would be. I didn't let that thought become a question as I silently slid the notes into my wallet. There was only one person I wanted to use these with, but she wanted me to save them for someone else.

I looked back up at her but she had already started walking towards the exit. "Perhaps one day, she'll say yes," I told myself as I followed her out the door.

[Friday, January 2, 2004: She was right you know. It just took me a long time to realize it.]
