[10:14 AM EST - Do call list.]

Frak, I probably should not have signed up for the Do Not Call List I have been getting more and more unsolicited calls on my cell. Fortunately I have call display to filter out a number of these unwanted calls, but this is ridiculous!

I should have waited to hear how well it (not) worked before using it.

Yup, I was initially burned by it too. The main problem with the legislation was the huge number of exceptions granted to certain organizations. I'm sure these polling firms and political parties are having a field day with the list. Fortunately, you can refuse these companies as well and there's an easy way to do it: go to www.ioptout.ca and sign up. The creator is a Toronto Star columnist and prof in Internet Law in Ottawa so it's a legit site.

However, I hear that those evil telemarketers have found an easy way around the legislation: they can call from the US. Alternatively, they use Call Privacy so their number shows up as "000000000" on the cell phone Call Display. Fortunately, both are easily avoided as I won't answer calls from anybody I don't recognize.

Another trick is an automated message which says "You can win a vacation....by calling back and completing our survey! This is NOT a telemarketing call".

After I visited IOptOut I continued to get "0000000000" calls for a while but they stopped after a month or so so I think the combo works!

Hmm! Something to consider then!
