[Wednesday, May 5, 2010: The proposal.]

Since I have a bit of time, I figure I should quickly write up something about the proposal that everyone was asking about months ago.

Well, I had been planning on asking for quite some time before, but wanted to figure out the best time and way to ask. I had originally thought of some grand spectacle, but I think MJNL would have killed me, and I was just not in the mood for grand spectacles. But first thing was first: get the ring.

My parents were visiting girl and their new grandson regularly, so they were going to be in Hong Kong often enough. I took the opportunity to ask them to look for a ring for me. I gave them the specs for the diamond and let my mom basically do the rest. They came back with a Tiffany style ring with a nice round brilliant cut diamond which fit the bill. I obviously had to ask them while MJNL was not around, so as not to raise any suspicions. That part was not so hard. What was harder was to ask permission.

I only go to MJNL's parent's place when there is a family thing going on (usually) and that meant that MJNL and I would go together. I figured that going on my own would be a little difficult since their house was out of the way of everything else I do, so I waited until MJNL was doing an errand, or in the washroom, and I was able to take the ring out of my jacket pocket (where I was hiding it) and ask her dad for permission. I think this was in January. He was quite happy about it, and I put the ring back before MJNL came back down. The next time she went away, I showed it to her mom, who was also very happy about it, and I hid the ring right afterward.

So with that out of the way, I had to figure when and how to propose. Well, this year the Lunar New Year started on the 14th of February, which was both Valentine's Day and Family Day so I figured that it would be an auspicious (although cliched) date to do it. We had two gatherings that weekend: One with my family on New Year's Eve (on the 13th), and one with her family on the 14th. I had toyed with the idea of asking with my whole family was around, but figured that was a little cheesy. Then I toyed with the idea of doing it while her entire family was around, and shot that idea down as well. That left a small window in between the two events to ask. Fine, so the question was how. Well, being Valentine's Day, it was now tradition for me to pick up roses for the day, and seeing as this was our third valentine's, I needed to get three roses. Getting the roses was not too hard. Hiding them in the condo was a little more difficult since there were not too many hiding places in our condo where I could put the roses without killing them. I will not give away my hiding spot (since I might need to use it again next year) but it was a good enough spot that she did not suspect a thing.

So on the morning of the 14th, I snuck out of bed and grabbed the roses that I had hidden. Grabbed the ring out of the hiding place I had for it (the ring was much easier to hide since it was small), and walked back to the bed, with my eveningware and bed head, woke her up with a kiss while I was on one knee, showed her the roses and started singing Dream Come True by Frozen Ghost after which I showed her the ring.

I think it was still to early in the morning because she basically just stared with her mouth agape and said "Thank you".

Uhh.. she thought it was a very nice present.

I guess it was not as obvious as I had intended it to be so I asked if she wanted to marry me and she said yes! I forgot how many times she said yes though.

So that is it. Nothing out of the ordinary.
