[7:21 PM EDT - Very annoying.]

I have been taking a look at girl's old computer. One thing she (and my dad who used it later) did not like about it was that it would hang occasionally. That is no joke, this computer keeps hanging on me relatively often. I have found a number of photos on the machine that are actually quite interesting: the CN Tower climb, an early hockey game (when I was still only wearing jeans), etc. I will see if I can save the photos before I blow away the hard drive, but I think it is a heat issue with the CPU or the graphics card.

Still, this is annoying.

it's because I cheaped out and got a duron, I'll bet. I remember adding more heat dissipater goo, but it didn't help.

I will keep hacking away at it then. Have you guys been getting any G-mail?

Too much heatsink grease can actually decrease the effectiveness of the heatsink. You want direct CPU-heatsink contact and just enough grease to fill in the holes.

Is the computer crashing at predictable times? (e.g. 10 min after bootup). If so, then it's likely a heat related problem. See if the computer runs better with the case open. Another possibility is the power source (but you should rule out the other components first). -- HKL

Yeah, the power source has been replaced before so I think that is less likely to be the issue. They did run the computer with the case open and a fan blowing inside, and I think it helps, but still does not stop the crashing. I do not have a full list of all the things that were tried to get this guy to work though, but I think I will just chuck it as it is not worth the time and effort to get it fixed.

Once I get the data off that is.
