[Tuesday, May 19, 2009: Star Trek Return]

We got up early this morning to catch our early morning flight back home. Well, I got up early at least. The alarm went off and nobody else got out of bed, so I was able to take a shower and get ready before anyone else was up. In any case, we were able to make it to the airport early, so MJNL and I grabbed some breakfast before our flight boarded. Unfortunately, we were unable to make it to the duty free shop to pick up some alcohol before our plane was ready to depart. In fact, we did not completely finish our breakfast either. I had thought that there might be a way to buy some on the plane, but I guess it only applies to certain flights that carry that type of merchandise.

In any case, we got home around ten, and we were pretty tired so we took a nap. I had a fitful sleep, but we got up around four.

This still gave us enough time to contact my dad, and find out if he was interested in watching 'Star Trek'. MJNL and I ended up going out to dinner with my dad at First Markham Place before watching the movie there.

The movie itself was entertaining, but the canonist in me cringed at some of the changes that were made, and was annoyed at how blah the main villan was.

I think the movie hinted that this was an "alternate timeline". The problem with alternate timelines is that canon no longer matters.

The pace of the movie was a bit too quick for me which is just as well since I thought of the following quibbles as I walked out:

1) How exactly does a ship survive going through a black hole?
2) Uhh, so Kirk graduated from the Academy with the rank of Captain to take command of Starfleet's flagship? Riiiight.

Nonetheless, there was an incredible amount of Easter Eggs planted in the movie for die hard fans. My personal favourite was the redshirt in the red coloured skydiving suit. Mind you, he didn't beam down (which is canon) but his death was pretty...spectacular. Hmm, Scotty beaming into the cooling system was pretty funny, too.

(Going to watch Terminator tomorrow -- hopefully it won't suck as badly as Rottentomatoes says it does...)
