Overview

The development and production of this 'Mech is still unclear, but it is believed that it was produced near the end of Aramis's rule to supplement losses suffered by the remaining Rim Worlds army. The development and production of the 'Mech took longer than anticipated and by the time the first few Ramshods began walking out of the factory, the planet was attacked and the factory was destroyed. Several Ramshods were captured but the blueprints disappeared during the chaos and were lost.

Today, the only known construction of the Ramshod is by Omnicorp who currently have an exclusive construction contract with Stormriders Merc Company to produce the 'Mech. How they were able obtain the blueprints are a mystery, and is still under investigation.

Capabilities

The Ramshod was originally designed as a heavy laser platform to temporarily replace assault 'Mechs lost on the battlefield. However, its low ammunition consumption and ease of maintenance made it very useful during deep penetration attacks. Its lack of hands severely limited its value as a raider, but allowed for easier access to the weapon systems mounted on the arms.

Its primary armament consists of a pair of Magna extended range lasers located on the right arm. They provide the long range punch of the 'Mech and is supported by half a dozen Magna medium lasers located on the left arm in a hexagon shaped pattern. The left arm also has a rounded blunt end similar to that of the Zeus.

Two Holly SRM-2 packs round out the weaponry. These missile racks are located on a shoulder mount above the left arm. The interesting use of a dual missile rack allows the 'Mechwarrior to use inferno rounds instead of the normal explosive rounds during combat. The infernos, coupled with the Guardian ECM Suite, provide the 'Mech with ample cover to escape in difficult situations.

Although classified as a heavy 'Mech, the Omnicorp Ramjets gives the Ramshod much greater mobility over similarly sized vehicles. The 13 tons of Starslab armor provide enough protection to last long enough in a fire fight to deliver its destructive cargo. While its 15 double heat sinks provide moderate compensation for the 'Mech's high heat output.

It is also interesting to note that virtually all of the non-electronic systems on this 'Mech can be replaced easily, even in this time of war. Many of the weapons are easy to access, giving the techs more time to worry about repair and less about finding the problem.

Variants

Several lower tech versions of the Ramshod have been slowly appearing on a number of planets of the Outworlds Alliance. These versions of the 'Mech contain no Star League technology at all, but retain the design advantages of the original 'Mech. The RSD-2A uses a standard endoskeleton, dropping both electronics devices and the CASE to compensate for the extra weight. Standard heat sinks are used, and the Magna Mk IV's are replaced by their weaker Magna Mk III cousins.

Again, how these 'Mechs were obtained by the Alliance is unknown, but rumour has it that Omnicorp has been selling these cheaper versions of the Ramshod to various mercenary groups and periphery states.
