The Ottocon was developed in 3026 by Dr. John Ottoman for House Steiner. Designed as a defensive unit offering support at all weapons ranges, the Commonwealth commanders scoffed at the idea of fielding a 'Mech that was in constant need of ammunition. After being rejected, Ottoman gathered his plans and prototypes and left the Commonwealth. He headed towards the Draconis Combine where he had hoped that he could convince the Kuritans to produce this 'Mech. Unfortunately, his dropship was ambushed by pirates and the designs and prototypes were presumed to have been destroyed.
The only Ottocons that are known to exist are currently being used by Nemesis. How this mercenary unit was able to obtain the plans and produce several of these designs remain a mystery. The 'Mech, however, has performed admirably in the role that it was designed to play.
The use of all four models of Mydron autocannons means that the damage curve for the Ottocon starts at very long range and increases dramatically as one approaches the 'Mech. Unfortunately, even with the extra ammunition, without any energy weapons, this 'Mech has a tendency of running out of ammunition for all of its weapons systems during prolonged battles.
Although the light and medium Mydron autocannons have very good range, they lack the punch necessary to stop heavy and assault class 'Mechs. Ideas to drop the two autocannons for a pair of PPCs were scrapped as the extra heat output crippled the 'Mech. Similar plans to use large lasers were also dropped as they reduced the maximum weapons range of the 'Mech by 38%. Long-range missiles were considered, but the chassis did not have enough space to install the racks, nor did it solve the ammunition problem. In the end, the original design was kept, despite the various drawbacks.
With the acquisition of this design by Clan Punisher, the clan engineers have taken this 'Mech and used clan technology to address the number of problems with this design.
The primary weapon is now a clan LB-20X autocannon in the right torso. The AC/5 in the opposite torso is replaced by an ER PPC while the right arm now holds a pair of large pulse lasers. The weight saved from these weapons changes allowed the light autocannon in the left arm to be upgraded to a Gauss rifle, supplying it with an ample three tons of ammunition. The double large laser barrels in the left arm and the massive rifle in the right arm required the removal of the hand actuators. This change also makes it easier to access the inner workings of the weapons and reduces maintenance costs.
Both the internal structure and the armor have been upgraded, providing more protection for less weight. The extra mass was used to upgrade the heat dissipation abilities of the 'Mech, using sixteen double strength heat sinks to dissipate the huge heat generation from the new weapon systems.
The new designation OCN-1C gives credence to the clan technology that has transformed this assault 'Mech into a terrifying force on the field.
For 'Mechs already in use, a field kit was issued so that these 'Mechs would also be able to benefit from advanced technology. The changes include replacing the light autocannon and its ammunition with an ER PPC, upgrading the AC/5 and AC/10 to an Ultra AC/5 and LB-10X respectively, and fitting a massive Gauss Rifle in place of the heavy autocannon. CASE was also installed in both the right and left torsos to minimize damage from ammunition explosions. These changes required dropping one of the heat sinks, but by upgrading the remaining heat sinks to double strength, the net heat dissipation capacity of the 'Mech was drastically increased. This upgraded version of the Ottocon (OCN-1G) is also quite a formidable opponent.
